So not every one of those 77.5 million views was paid, I hope Sony financials in January/February will gives us more clarity on how much the movie actually made/lost.

Kinda funny when it showed up on the front page of YT Aus... considering it isnt available in our country =P

You find it funny, I read from a lot of people that they were really pissed at the movie not being released worldwide

@nebel

oh....trailers as well. hmmm...thar is different. But it is the weekend, this number is bound to skyrocket over 100 million and beyond soon.

I wonder if this point in history will be forever known for making new releases on the internet a popular thing? Now that everyday joes see how easy it is to stream it.

The interview might very well set a precedent for that, but we'll see. I'm assuming that that is still some ways off though.

And yeah I'm not totally sure the trailer thing is true, I read it in a reddit comment, I have no credible source to back it up.

Well its all the more reason to pirate it if you ask me. If they arent willing to let me buy it but are going to allow those who can buy it share it with me then thats on them. Next time maybe they will consider a worldwide release.

So 6 dollars a rental times 80 million equal......

Sony execs just hired more Korean cyber terrorist to their marketing team!

Plus people who bought it, made this on its way to a billion dollar movie?

Oh and I just read that the 77.5 million include trailer views since the trailer and the full movie apparently have the same youtube link, that should distort the number quite a bit.

I'm pretty sure that's not how it works.  Otherwise, Youtube would barely make any money on movies.  Only one person could rent/buy a movie, then give out the link for all to watch, just killing the point.  I'm pretty sure that if someone gave me a link to the movie, it would just bring me to the page that allows me to rent it myself.

Dude, I highly doubt that they made that up.

It might not be how it's supposed to work, but it did/does for this movie, possibly something that Youtube/Sony overlooked.

Or it could be something that they just assumed works, but never actually tried it.  Do we have any other sources that back it up?  Or that back up the trailer theory from a single Reddit post?

Awful movie. Few funny scenes. Rest is just crap.

I already said that I have no other source for the trailer thing. As for the other thing, I can only find articles saying that the URL copying thing works on the seetheinterview website, but I do find it more likely that people could somehow share the link with friends, than that a) 77.5m people actually rented the movie (which would mean that it made $465m on Youtube alone) or b) fewer people rented it and rewatched it time and again.

Something about that view count just isn't right.

Unless the people who rented it watched it more than once, maybe a 2nd time with friends or family, which I find more believable, so that could cut the count down by 1/3 to 1/2 or so legit rentals.  That's my guess, anyway.
