Except a lot of people do. Since when was inFamous 2 heavily bundled though? It's only around 2m sales, hardly comparable to the millions of bundles most of the games in the OP were included in.

Both PS3 and 360 also have more 10m+ sellers than PS2 (PS2 had only 5, PS3 had 7 and 360 8)

I'm not exactly a "casual" gamer, and I'd say Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit, and Wii Fit Plus are quality games. They achieve what they set out to do in a polished, accessible, and enjoyable manner. I still pay Resort to this day, it's one of the best games of 2009 in my book.

No doubt they may be well polished and achieve what they set out to do. I'm just not convinced that that is something that's appealing to most core gamers to spend money on. Quality may have actually been the wrong word. A game can be simplistic but still a good quality game. But if it is simplistic enough, I may not want to shell out money for it. Monopoly is a quality board game. But I wouldn't buy the videogame version. And seeing it sell 10m units would not make me any more interested in finding out if it is interesting after all, when I know the majority of it's fans are people who are interested in different types of games than myself. Meanwhile, if I see a "core" game sell 10m+, I'll more likely look into reviews for it and see if it's anything for me. Unless it's alled Call of Duty. (There are exceptions too, obviously.) |
"Core" and "casual" aren't as clearly defined as is commonly held, I reckon. For example, I consider myself a core gamer, and I play games like Monster Hunter Tri that are very beginner-unfriendly, but I'll also break out Wii Sports Resort and have a ball with the motion-controlled kendo. A lot of people enjoy both "core" and "casual" experiences.

Well that's one reason why I didn't use the term casual. Nintendo also found a market in something called the "non-gamer". And I think those can often be quite different from your average "casual gamer", even though they're often grouped together under the same term. The non-gamer can be a 47 year old mom, who buys Wii Fit to do yoga. Or a 70 year old grandpa, who plays Brain Age for DS on the train ride home. The DS and Wii attracted many of these consumers as well. And most of them have since moved on to mobile gaming. |
I sort of get what you mean.
I personally found the Wii catered well to a variety of different game types; sure, there was Wii Sports and Wii Fit, but there was also Xenoblade, Monster Hunter Tri, The Last Story, Sin & Punishment 2, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, Zelda Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, etc.

And it was one of the worst moves for consumers. |
How so? Wii had a ton of very good games, definitely some shovelware cap but what console doesn't have that?

The Wii definitely did. Just that the non-gamers I was refering to (which Wii and DS had plenty of) might be more inclined to pick up the sequel to Wii Fit rather than check out Xenoblade. Gamers like you and I are more inclined to look into many more options. So as our interest in games is more spread out, so will our contribution to gamesales. But the non-gamewrs will only be interested in one type of games, for the most part, and so their money will be focused only on those games. |
True. A lot of "gamers" are like that too though; we all know that guy who only plays COD or FIFA.

Yes all those or many of those same gamers are going hardcore this gen, Both PS4 and XBox One are selling incrediable well. I think these same gamers grew up or a good percentage of them and are going hardcore. I think this gen will match last gen in sales, for Xbox and PS.

Yes... Blame on both sides. But can anyone really expect something other then what 3rd party did? Nintendo shot themselves on the foot, and 3rd party wanted to run, not to be a crutch for Nintendo and be slowed down. If you know what I mean. But hey, nintendo pull it off at the end, not much to others but greatly for themselfs.
