7th generation is like a dark age for most Japanese game publisher.

When PS4 dominate i believe the era of Renaissance will come for all Japanese developer.

Even the darkest of days share eternal bright.

Seventh gen might have been like you describe, but it also brought to us some of the best japanese games ever conceived in History.

Given the circumstances, though, I don't see that changing with the PS4. Perhaps with the PS5.

PS5 will be the Industrial era then haha

Lara Croft and the guardian of Light  85

TWEWY 88 yes
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: MLaaK 80
FFXII : RW 81
FFT : War of the Lions 88

Total 15 games 2 new IPs + 1 reboot
out of 36 published games according to Wright. 60 points over 80
  average 84 metascore

But screw them, they did FFXIII, HD remakes and mobile games.

Discuss.

FFXIV had to be released twice to get things right.

BBS and TWEWY: I personally think Nomura has the hand of Midas, so SE gets a pass when he's at the helm

You really gonna give SE the credit for those Eidos/Crystal Dynamics games?

That just leaves FFXIII and a bunch of handhelds and WiiWare games. As a DS/3DS/PSP owner, sure SE is great. As a console owner, when they're the ones sticking to their bread and butter (aka SE making console JRPGS, not Eidos making Tomb Raider and Hitman), SE has been lacking.

Exactly why I'm correcting him :P

Best handheld game of the generation according to many. Developed by Square Enix 1st Production Department (Kingdom Hearts team).

It's in the list. Definitely a 10/10 for me, but i can see how the OST and design is not for everyone.

Yes. They owned Eidos when all this happened. Remember the shit Tomb Raider had become before SE bought them. I'm not saying they are 100% responsible for this, just that this is weirdly coincidental.

As a console owner : Handelds not consoles confirmed.

They are loved for making japanese RPGs. Japanese prefer handelds. They also happen to have different divisions as far as handelds and homeconsole developpment are concerned. Which means that FFXIV chaos had no influence on handelds games. Which is why for the 7th gen SE's handelds games were better than homeconsole ones.

I'd like to extrapolate OP's inner point with this thread to Capcom, too.

But hey, they made Resident Evil 6, some locked-in DVD content on Asura's Wrath and rehashed SFIV for the sixteenth time.

That's true too. Capcom released a few gems, and a lot of them were underrated.

I mean DMC reboot design and gameplay were top notch, but screw them Dante looks emo.

Capcom, in addition to their general douchebaggery last gen, released Dragon's Dogma and didn't bring it to PC. They're assholes. Fuck em'.

Squeenix revived Eidos, so they're cool. I haven't played FFXIII, but it can't be that bad, right?

Indeed it can't be that bad. OST is as awesome as always and that will never change. It would already be a solid 4/10 with just the ost and the graphics and gameplay of depression quest.
