I have to agree with some of the people here. It IS stupid for Sony to put out these old numbers. It's bound to lead to another round of pointless threads here and silly articles on N4Gs. What are they thinking?

Obviously Sony has plenty of confidence in their product. It is a certainty that the demand for PS4 is so high that they have no need to constantly embelish numbers, but rather try to reinforce certain figures in the consumer's mind.

Hence the sales figures from 6 weeks ago and holding the price steady throughout the holidays.
But also, it shows Sony's resolve to use only true and currently verifiable numbers, instead of relying on quoting future developments.

It's 13.5 million shipped as of September 30th. VGChartz had the PS4 at 11.4 million sold through at that point. The PS4 is wwwaaaayyyyy undertracked here.

To give an example, Sony announced 10 million sold through as of August 10th. VG has the PS4 at 9.74 million the week ending August 9th and that's after adjusting it up after the news...
