That is one slim slim profit.
But a profit is a profit! Wonder how many u's they'll ship for Smash and Christmas.

$224 million isn't that slim actually. For three months its pretty good. Though it's inflated by the yen and probably the fact that they were selling many Wii U units are full inventory profit (as they had paid off those systems last quarter).

If Nintendo could make a steady $224 million every three months in net profit, I'd say they'd take it and run at this point (so would Sony for that matter).

Where are you getting that $224 million figure from? OP only says 215 million yen.

Not great, but not too bad either. They at least made some money, and they've got what should be their most profitable quarter now, so yeah could end up as a profit for Nintendo this year.

I disagree.  All of sudden its great if they manage to scrap a meagre net profit?  (operating income is still bad)

The hardware sales are relatively terrible, profits (if any) are tiny and the sales of the 3ds are falling fast.  Its fairly bleak imo.

$223 million for a July-September quarter isn't actually all that bad. It's pretty damn good actually even though a big chunk of it is because of a favorable yen.

that woudlnt be that bad no... but thats not what it was.  It was 215m yen for the 3 month period, or $2m.

"The company said its net profit soared as a result of exchange gains totalling 15.5bn yen."
From the very same article.
215m yen - is operating profit for 3 months. Net income/profit is much higher due to the yen exchange rate.

how do WiiU and 3DS shipments compare to last year? and what are the totals?

WiiU is up 100% YOY! 300k to 610k. Total LTD is 7.29m

3DS is down nearly 50% 1.27m from 2.49m a year ago, LTD is 45.42m

so much for 3ds reaching 100 million. WiiU is still really bad even though its improving, and some people thought it will beat the xb1.

2.68m 3DS has shipped this year. It needs to be more or less flat this holiday or it'll ship under 10m units for the year.

Net income =/= profit.

The actual profit was only about $2 million.

Net income is profit, lol.

Pretty sure that operating income number is incorrect anyway if they made 24 billion yen in net profit, with 15.5 billion coming from currency gains, the rest has to be operating income.

This is the Neogaf number straight from Nintendo's own earnings report:

Q2

96.7 billion yen revenue
9.5 billion yen operating income
24.2 billion yen net income

Both WiiU and 3DS probably overtracked by ~400k.

I remember when there was a debate about 3DS vs. PSP lifetime sales. I think much fewer would debate that now . My lifetime estimate for 3DS continues to be lowered. Now I'm thinking 65m

Yeah, you're right. But... that doesn't make sense. How could the net figure be higher than the operating income figure, especially by that much?

yen exchage rate, man... Every quarter is the same questions... (((

Even if they made 1 penny in operating income, you do realize NET income is the end of the day take home pay day right? So they did make $224 million last quarter any way you slice it.

Also you guys should look at the statement, the operating number is for SIX MONTHS from April-September, so it takes into account Nintendo's negative earnings from the Apr-June quarter. They made an operating profit from July-September and an even bigger net profit.

At least they made a profit
