Forums - Gaming - Xbox One Parity Clause Is ‘Brutal’, Dev Explains Why Their Game Is Not Coming On Xbox One

Microsoft has this policy wherein if indie developers want to release their games on the Xbox One, they would need to launch it alongside other platforms. If the developer has ever released the game on any other platform first, say the PS4, the game cannot launch on Microsoft’s console. However there have been a few exceptions to this case in the past but the policy is no doubt a deal breaker for smaller independent developers.

Speaking to Krillbrite Studios’ Adrian Tingstad Husby, GamingBolt asked whether there is a specific reason behind not launching Among The Sleep on the Xbox One.

“It’s mostly a question about resources. As a small indie team, developing for consoles can be very demanding, so we decided to focus our attention at the PS4 for now. Also, Sony have been very eager and pleasant to deal with,” he said to GamingBolt.

He also shared his thoughts on Xbox One’s parity clause for indie developers. “Well, as a small developer working to release our first game, it’s rather brutal. Simultaneously shipping is very challenging, especially for small indie teams. The clause (if enforced) means it might not be possible for us to release on Xbox One, even though we wanted to.”

Krillbrite Studios are currently working on the PS4 version of Among The Sleep.

MS is no longer in a position of power to dictate terms to indie developers, so the parity clause will disappear very soon...

They must be mighty small if simultaneous publishing caused them an issue. We've heard other indie devs say they got their game working on Xbox One within a few days, and published it on the system for just a few thousand dollars. I wonder if Krillbrite even tried to work with MS on the issue, since they have said they will work with devs on a case by case basis. Other devs who released their games on other system first said they had little issue convincing Microsoft to allow them to release on Xbox One.

Well that basically sounded like MS PR.  Anywho I'm sure they aren't the first to have the issue as many indies this gen are coming to PS4 and not X1.  Both sides surely have SOME sort of trouble and the parity clause is a big hamperer

I agree with this.  A few devs have stated that they just submitted to MS and even though their game was on other systems, MS sent them a dev kit and approve their game.  I am wondering if the dev even tried to submit their game or did they just go by what was stated a while ago.  I still consider MS not making it known that they are not holding fast to that rule anymore but then again maybe MS just do not want a lot of junk so keep it there for sub par games.

Sooner or later, the parity clause will eventually be dropped... It's proving to be quite a hindrance.

We've heard about this before. MS really needs to get rid of the parity clause.

They have to power to do whatever they want.. Sorry.. Indie games are NOT system sellers.  It is the benefit of the Indie developer to be on X1.. NOT Microsoft.. They are allowing indies to SELF publish and use all the resources a big developer can, and sending many developers FREE dev kits..  If you are sending FREE stuff to developers, might you NOT want something in return?  It sure wont be a huge cut of money.. as most indie games sell for $15 or less..  and don't sell in great numbers..

Would you rather have 15 million audience or 10 million? That is the choice of the developer.

anything else I'm missing?

[x] Ignore the fact that many studios notable studios like Respawn had to get help.

[x] ignore the fact that this is the developers first game, and Microsoft isn't showing any interest in games that they don't think will be big sellers.

[x] indies are not games

Come on MS, if you don't get it together, stuff like this will happen and the x1 needs as much help as it can get against the ps4
