Well, that's why they get for not launching with a Japanese 3rd party game.

It's not totally what it used to be during N64 era of course, but i dont think it shrinked from PS3 to PS4. There is no evidence about that for now. I'd see easily the PS4 reaching 8-9M, especially if the dragon quest come back is real |
I doubt the PS4 will reach 10 million like the PS3, but I'll be happily proven wrong, Dragon Quest will certainly help. The overall market will still be a lot smaller than last gen, the Wii U will not come close to touching the Wiis numbers unless something unforeseen happens and the X1 looks to become a total failure from the get go. Overall I'd say the console market will be lucky to reach 15 million units across all 3 platforms in Japan this gen.
In today's new: It turns out that if you release a console in a market that barley wants one, with almost no games that appeal to the tastes of that country, it will sell badly.
If i was any more shocked i'd be used as an alternative energy source.
Really though, Japan is a lost cause. I think the PS4 has a chance of overtaking the WiiU there once titles like MGS5 and FF15 hit, but it won't matter much. Winning in Japan this gen (compared to previous generations) will be like boasting that you can swim faster than a 4 year old.

You have to always look at where the market used to be before saying it's "dead", the Japanese console market is showing a clear downward slope. |
Of course it is, I never suggested it wasn't. But it is still a worthwhile market and to say it's dead is just silly imo. The 700k PS4 has right now is more than many countries will sell across the entire generation
For the people that want know my prediction:
I predict 5,000,000 PS4 lifetime in Japan.
So, less than the Saturn and the Nintendo 64.
I think the Japanese market will end up something like this by the end of the gen:
PS4: 7 million LTD
Wii U: 3.5 million LTD
3DS: 21 million LTD
Vita: 9 million LTD

PS3 hadnt so big system sellers in fact, except good multiplatform games, a,nd was not a joy for japan developers, so i can see PS4 getting more games than PS3, maybe not outselling it but reaching the same numbers by taking back some games from PS2 era like DQ, it could be
Well to be fair, it's the same all over the world, Wii was an anomaly, never the 3 consoles will reach +260 M in the world. I see Wii U reaching 6M in Japan at the best since the 2 biggest seller release in 2014, after that, only bundles and price cut will help to reach such numbers. ( and maybe X since japan love mecha)
Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:
PS4: 17m XB1: 10m WiiU: 10m Vita: 10m
| Aerys said: Oh yeah, only the biggest and first 3D game, which is a Mario, nothing at all...
Seriously ,the console could have sold on that and only that for years |
I don't believe I said otherwise, I simply said literally three games. Which is, indeed, true. N64 had three games after launch and nothing until September, as was asked by the person I quoted.

Wii u just like in the west is doing a lot worst that wii because it lost casuals gamers, xbox like usual is doing bad in Japan nothing new here Microsoft is doing less effort then with xbox360.
Playstation 4 problem unlike wii u and xbox is games i strongly believe 2015 line up will save ps4 if it's not the case i would say consoles are really dead in Japan
PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m
Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m
