Would've been cooler if they put this stuff in the game in the first place.

But then we wouldn't have the game until holiday 2014

And I would have been fine with that.  To me DLC is an excuse to put out an incomplete game.

Don't listen to me though.  I'm old and will go on all day about how things used to be better.

But the game was complete...If this game was released back in the day, no one would have thought it needed DLC.

I have to agree with amp on this one. As much as this DLC is attractive and fairly priced, I feel a little uncomfortable with it.

If Nintendo thought this content worthy of the game, why not include it in the original release?

Now, the mitigating factors here are twofold: 1) Mario Kart 8 is practically perfect, and thus requires no DLC; and 2) this particular DLC doesn't appear like something ripped from the original game to be sold piecemeal -- it seems, like the Sonic Lost World Yoshi and Zelda DLC, to be a non-canonical add-on that extends the original, standalone game, which could function perfectly without it.

So I have less of a problem with Mario Kart 8 DLC than I do with, for example, Mario Golf, which supported day one DLC that could easily have been included with the retail game. That being said, I'd rather these extra tracks, karts, and characters be included in the original release, or, failing that, a sequel or expansion pack.

But lets say they do this, and then they decide to add more DLC, then some people would again raise the question of why they didn't add that DLC from the start. So where do you draw the line? The fact that MK8 did have 32 tracks is good enough for me.

I'm totally against DLC but I have to agree with you on this..it's fair from Nintendo and we get even more than we ever hoped for.

Only when they are finished and approved are they really deemed worthy of being added. They're now taking the time to work on these ideas to make them worthy of the game and the consumers money. Some ideas are scrapped at the end, so you can never be sure until development is finished.

As for why they didn't add them from the beginning, well then when do you stop and say this is enough and release the game? Because this may not be the only DLC they'll be releasing. We may get more the following year, and the year after, etc.
Look at Street Fighter 4 and it's updates for example. If they would have added the content of all 5 iterations of the game (Street Fighter 4, Super Street Fighter 4, Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition,  Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v.2012, Ultra Street Fighter 4) into the very first one, the game launch would have been delayed by 3-4years, and the development budget would have been enormous, before they even knew if the game would sell well or not .
Mario Kart 8 launched with 32 tracks, which is standard for the Mario Kart series. perhaps they could have delayed the game for another year and added these characters, but then they would need to pay saleries to everyone fotr an extra year, and none of us consumers would be funding any of that, since the retail price would be the same. But lets say they do this, and then they decide to add more DLC, then some people would again raise the question of why they didn't add that DLC from the start. So where do you draw the line? The fact that MK8 did have 32 tracks is good enough for me.

But your post assumes DLC must be made. EAD Kyoto 1, instead of releasing this DLC collection, could have followed a number of alternate routes. It could have delayed the game to include this DLC content; it could have left the game alone and redeployed its staff and resources to other projects; or it could have incorporated the DLC into Mario Kart 9.

That's how it should be, and Nintendo tries to call it add-on content (AOC) instead of DLC. But if they try to offer characters that they took out to put the Koopalings just to sell them later then it's a no go. The content so far has been mostly original.

Definitely a good way to put MK8 back in the limelight over the holiday season. DLC seems like a pretty good value as well. I imagine the cost will be 10-15 dollars. For 3 characters and 4 tracks, that's not too bad, especially since it seems like they're throwing in a vehicle or two as well.

It's 12 dollars for 6 characters, 8 vehicles and 16 tracks. It's definitely not too bad.

Eah pack is 7 pounds, which is roughtly 12 dollars.  However, things don't always work out to exact currency converstions.  I thought it was one cup per pack, but it's 8 which is even better.

Just look at Nintendo's main page

http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/kxQeOuaDWhFVthovbOvAu7LohoolqN_T

Each pack is $8.00 american solo.  For both its only $12.

Each pack has 2 new cups, for a total of 4 cups.  As any mario kart fan knows a cup is 4 tracks, thus 16 total new courses.  8 retro and 8 new.

Didn't realize they'd announced US prices.  That's a damn good deal.

Now I'll buy MK8 waiting for the DLC.
