Forums - Microsoft - Xbox boss Phil Spencer says Tomb Raider Xbox Exclusivity Is A Win/Win, Not An Attack On PlayStation Players

Bying timed exclusivity has been going on since the NES era, not really a new practice :).

Well, it does indeed add something. It adds a competitive element to the X1 that PS4 will not have, even though it is a timed exclusivity deal.  I think what Phil is getting at is that MS can then market X1 as the only place with both an exclusive FPS in Halo 5 AND and exclusive TPS in TR next fall. Perception is everything.

No, in the NES area the deal was, if you publish a game on the NES you do not publish any version of it on a competing system, Nintendo did not buy the exclusivity deals, however they got royalties on all sales, just like platform owners do on modern consoles.

I don't think you know what actually adding means, it would add something if MS went on and MADE a new game (or got a studio to make one from scratch for them), in this current form they do not give anything to either their clients, you would have gotten the game anyway if you have an xb1 or a 360, and they take away from PC/PS owners, at least temporarily... the only "value" you have are talking points when trolling in discussion boards.

So it is a 360 game too..... Why would people get the game on Xbox one then

For the same reason people would buy Destiny on the PS4/One instead of the PS3/360.

It's a significantly better version.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

This whole thing is ridiculous, as if he did not know on what other platform(s) a big titles like this one is coming?

He needs to demonstrate the "win-win" thing, not just say it, right now XB1/360 owners do not "win" anything, this game was going to be released on their system anyway, however PS/PC (maybe even Wii U) owners certainly loose an option.

So as far as customers go, nobody wins (it's not a win if you have to buy a new console because you want to play game X that was obviously planned on a device you already own...

So the companies involved do have some potential "wins" MS is poised to sell a few consoles, especially considering that the game will not have a better PS4 version and an even better PC version (depending on your config) to compare it to....

Now that also shows you the difference in attitude, when Sony saw they may need some 3rd person action shooter to respond to Gears of War (I assume a lot of things here) they got one of their studio to build something from scratch, a new world, characters, etc. they took a risk. MS on the other hand, they went out, and placed a bid to have a game taken away from gamers on other platforms, and Square Enix took the money.

I am still not sure who's worst in this, MS for corrupting, Square for being corrupt? MS/Square for implying they don't know what will happen once the timed exclusivity clause expire?

I would much rather companies go in and create games than prevent them from being published on competing platforms (ideally even first party titles would show up at least on PC, that would make preservation of old games SO much easier).

You are mostly correct, but you are wrong in one thing: Spencer says that they tried to create a competitor to Uncharted, but failed. And since their first party studios were unable to compete with Sony, they were resigned to moneyhatting existing franchises.

Unfortunately, it seems that the only one who cannot read (or write) is you, as nothing you have written there is even remotely true or correct.

its win/win/loss/loss :p

Microsoft win  for holiday 2015, square enix win big $ to help their studio, PC/Ps4 lose the fun in 2015, and at end square enix lose money on some ps4/pc user who be angry and will buy the game used or pirate this.

Game ?

Nintendo signed an exclusivity deal, along with the legendary seal of approval, with developers during the NES days, making games unavailable for any other system for a few years but also guaranteeing high quality software to be releasded on the console. This is why no Castlevanias, mega mans and such were available for other systems. It was also why Sega started to produce so many games inhouse, they simply had to compete.

Yeah, how you go about securing exclusivity is not really the case now, is it? Fact is, this practice has always existed.

And you mean MS didn´t add an exclusive title to the XBox brand with the TR deal? Well, I´m suprised :).

Main reason to be annoyed by this kind of deal might be because Tomb Raider as an IP was irrelevant for years, players believing in this reboot and buying it is what made it relevant again, being on Xbox360, PS3, PC and current gen consoles.

That deal is obviously not made to be a "win win" from a player perspective, and based on all the negative backslash this deals created, i seriously doubt it'll be positive for Tomb Raider.
