Forums - Sony - Sony's Jim Ryan interview: 'We don't need to buy exclusivity'

The longer this gen goes on the less effort Sony will have to secure more games.

Sony of Gen 8 seems all about taking pot shots at MS.

Lame.

Well, they have a ton of exclusive indie content and time exclusives. I assume most of the indie stuff was with them working close to indie devs, as explained in the article.

Technically though, they really DON'T need to do it, they are kicking ass so far...but they still can/do.

Cool so you're handling the excuses as to WHY they are securing exclusivity. So we agree the need does exist. Thanks.

Must not have read his post correctly. He is saying that many of those indies are choosing Sony over Microsoft for other reasons than getting a direct payment for it.

Yea....my post pretty much said devs are going to Sony, as opposed to Sony bringing them in. There is no "why they're securing exclusives". The indie devs are making exclusives by virtue of way too many hurdles to put it on an MS platform. And since they, then, are only able to do it on one console, it's exclusive. Sony has exclusivity by default in that regard, by no volition of their own, other than having a more welcoming platform for the developers. If MS would be less restrictive, we wouldn't have the present situation between the two companies

Some people have a difficult understanding the difference between not needing and never doing and try to spin things to fit their agenda. And offering advantages isn't buying. Also Sony won't refuse a game on their platforms because it released first elsewhere... But let's bash Sony because that is the funny thing to do.
In one thread let's say sony doesn't have money and in the other complain about how much they expend on things my company didn't, like putting a better hw inside the box, because Sony should be bankrupt and wouldn't have money to release ps4.

Sony should say "We CAN'T buy exclusivity."

Sony used to buy up exclusives ALL the time. Why else was Grand Theft Auto released on PS2 months before PC and Xbox? GTAIII wasn't even released on Xbox til 2 years later.

And of course, Sony bought console exclusivity for Tomb Raider II and III in the 90s.

This all changed with the PS3's outrageous costs. Neat fact: GTAIV was also supposed to be timed exclusive for the PS3, as well as Assassin's Creed but Sony couldn't afford it.

If the PS3 didn't destroy Sony in terms of finance (say, PS3 used generic PowerPC processor like Xbox One and a crappier Blu-ray player) it could've possibly afforded more exclusives.

Maybe, just maybe... the ps2 was a huge success ?

No ? You don't think so ?

You really think sony paid for ff10 and 12 exclusive too ? Or for metal gear 2/3 ? (even if they were on others supports later) or *insert name here* ?

If you have more than 50% of the total market, yeah, you can get exclusivity without the need to pay anything, wonderful, isn't it?

You need to brush up on your console history. Tomb Raider wasn't on the N64 because the system used cartidges as its medium. They were expensive and carried a lot less space than the CD format. The Sega Saturn was a pain in the arse to develop for. It was basically the PS3 of that generation, only that it suffered as much worse fate. Sony didn't need to buy exclusivity to Tomb Raider at all because they didn't need to try.
