A. Why did you quote the same post twice? B. The underlined is a metaphor (didn't think I'd need to explain this to someone like you). Translation - you making a claim that has no backing and very few will agree with you on. C. Sony has been what? Dishonest about numbers (in the past)? If so, I'd like to see when/where. |
Because I ironically had two tabs open and forgot I was responding to the same post until after I posted once.
I know it's a metaphor, I just find it exagerrative.
In regards to sales numbers, there was a big hoopla at the start of last generation. They were reported shipped to warehouses as sold, and revised their reporting to show shipped to retailers. I don't know why you think that Sony doesn't spin things. I figured you were on the internet enough during PS3 to see how much things were distorted to find a positive light.

I still doubt. He gave the PR speak, but didn't quote any sales tracker... |
*1 Number of retail sales to consumers is estimated by SCEI. PS4 sales data in Japan collected 2/22/2014 – 8/10/2014. PS4 sales data in North America collected 11/15/2013 – 8/10/2014, in Europe and Latin America collected 11/29/2013 – 8/10/2014, and in Asiacollected 11/29/2013 – 8/10/2014.

All speculation but they shipped 3.2 million PS3/4's(sonys financial) up until June 30(what the split is no one knows but wa can favor it skews heavily in favor of PS4). Given how businesses like to work that likely includes a shipment(ready to go may not have actually left the factory) very close to that June 30 number. I doubt that they sold the shipment that was in transit(should take roughly a month to get to retailers, from personal retail experience 1-2 months on hot items) shipped enough more(another month for that shipment) and sold that as well. They can get away with lying about that number because nearly no one has access to those numbers and they will be well beyond that number as of the next quarter. Sounds great, rallys the troops and they easly pass that number by the end of the month+ smash that out of the park with the white bundle.
No other company announces it this way because there is too much involved to see how many have been sold. Traditionally companies look to companies like the NPD to tout their sold numbers. If it were easy to get sold to customer numbers investors would know because investors dont like channel stuffing. In the end Sony's main customers are retailers and not individuals.
Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.
Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

I appreciate the link. Sad that it's just internal estimations.
| outlawauron said: See, that's the thing. It's not a lie, it's spin. Sold through to consumers. Keep in mind who their consumers are, because we are not them. For all they care, shipped is sold, because they've already got the money from it. Like I said originally, I'm not saying they're being deceitful. I'm just doubting them because they didn't quote any sales tracker. That's it. We'll find out pretty soon as more NPD/Chart track data comes out. |
He said in people's hands, sold to consumers. Why are you even questioning that? Consumers are not retailers...they are customers but not consumers.
"Sold through" has also always meant one thing and why would that change now.
Why in the world is this even being questioned?

CGI, people look back at what Ubisoft said when they announced Watch_dogs: Ubisoft? announced ongoing record sales for Watch Dogs, which has sold-through more than 4 million copies in its first week, positioning it as the best-selling new IP at launch across the video game industry* We know now that this was shipped. Adding together what all of the trackers reported, it wasn't even close to 3 million for the first week. |
No, that was sold through...to consumers. They shipped like 6m I believe and have now shipped 8m.
Which trackers?

Because the last two major press releases about sold through numbers were reporting shipped numbers. That's where my doubt comes from.

Not "just". They have way more accurate tracking than any one tracker does. And yes, that includes VGC (which really should hardly be called a tracker - it's just estimates based on very few samples).

Thanks for putting an end to this!
