some of you really need to get over yourselves. You are not the sacred holders of anything Nintendo, please. Them having stuff on mobile wouldnt take away from anything they do regularly. The money they could make would be worth it and you could have your "pure" Nintendo. everyone wins. And no it being on mobile isnt going to take away sales from the "real" games since people buying the mobile and vice versa understand the difference.

The problem with that is opening the door. If nintendo were to release games on smartphones, they will make some big profits at first, but it is well documented mobile sucess does not equal continued growth.

What I see Nintendo doing down the road is to create a Nintendo app, where you can buy games and play them within the same app. Release VC games on it, but always keeping control of it. Put adds for wiiU and 3ds games there and keep it small.

but they are not growing now and it doesnt look like they will anytime soon. they have to do something. Cause new Smash and Zelda arent going to cut it.

See i like your idea. That makes sense. have it on mobile and have alot of control. Thats pretty good. Its better than people here just blindly saying "No mobile" like some hick conservative

The problem with mobile and Nintendo is if you ever open the door to $1-$5 Mario/Mario Kart/Pokemon on mobile, no one other than core fans are ever going to pay even $30 for those franchises ever again IMO and certainly never going to buy a seperate piece of Nintendo hardware to play them.

They'd be better off in that case just accepting a giant gaurunteed moneyhat contract from Microsoft for like X amount of dollars per year to make games for the XBox and in turn allow some Windows 9 compatibility with a future handheld.

Yes they will cause Nintendo istn putting ALL their games on mobile. Whaor? ill say it again for the 6th time. It would just be the really old games of yesteryear. not much different than what SE was doing. Your not going to see Mario Kart or Pokemon on mobile. And if you do it would be the first ones. So yes they would pay 30 for those franchises because they are still going to want to play the latest game and no something from the GB era. or hell they'll want both.

The problem is though Nintendo skews much more towards kids and casuals. If you give that crowd the option of having those games available to them for $1 a pop, a lot of them will just say "well I already have Mario on my iPhone, why do I need to pay $50 for a new Mario game?".

I just think it's a risk Nintendo is unwilling to take because if it didn't turn out the way you say it would, then Nintendo would've effectively devalued their 30 year old franchises to $1 a pop wonders.

Nintendo has already stated they have no plans to realese games for ios/andorid, but release apps to draw people in to their consoles. As well mobile games are 99% of the time crap, and while they have not said it for obvious reasons, I think they know this, and want to keep making games for THEIR platforms

I think Iwata's fate pretty much hinges on Quality of Life. If its a success, he'll be in his job for the next 10 years IMO without much fuss.

If it's a failure ... I think he'll resign out of a Japanese sense of duty (and probably a lot of angry share holders).

RIght, I understand that.  People will buy it.   My point was that using name recognition, to sell a crappy product, erodes brand trust.  It might be fine for short term profit, but it damages the one thing Nintendo has going for them - faith in their software.

Yep. Iwata understands this, thank god

??? who said anything about releasing a crappy product? where did you even get that from? The products wont be crappy if they do it right

You were responding to a post about their games not working well on mobile.  Hence, crappy product.

my point is people would still buy it, they buy them all the time

thats fair. IMHO this is Ninty we are talking about, they are not going to put out stuff thats SO bad it starts to erode trust. Their fanbase knows better. Hell people still support things like Sonic and that has one of the most manic track records of any IP anywhere.

The minutes from the shareholders meetings typically have this question. To which Iwata normally replies, "are there any gaming companies with sustained revenue growth in mobile?" then everyone shuts up

Why would everyone shut up? it's the only gaming market that's actually growing where as Nintendo's main markets are getting smaller and smaller.

entering smartphone gaming will only have short term (but huge) gains for the company, but they will risk their ''Nintendo'' label losing much of its power

I believe developing a 3DS with phone features will be huge and even smarter than smartphones

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Because Square, Capcom, Disney, EA and others have all had a really difficult time consistently monetizing mobile. Certainly King makes off good with Candy Crush -- but they might take the same fate as Zynga if they don't produce another hit game soon.

Even with their brand recognition, they may have a difficult time breaking into iOS/Android gaming. If their venture into this space is anything other than a huge success they'd be left with a significantly dimished business model and cannibalize their whole legacy of producing gaming hardware and selling games at retail. As long as there's a market for a decent number of their games to sell 1-10 million+ at retail, they make out just as well as if they produced games that sell 50 million+ downloads on mobile(Assuming a 99 cent download price). +IMO: I sincerely doubt Nintendo gamers would take well to F2P schemes.

Better for Nintendo to be a big fish in a small pond. And more importantly, better for them to be in a position where they can truly move the needle in gaming trends rather than subjugated to Apple, Google or Amazon.

And it's not like their ignoring mobile completely. There's several different MK8 companion apps, some of which I believe are endorsed by Nintendo. Miiverse works on mobile too. I think we'll see more efforts like that.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

But Square, Disney, and EA have done very well. Guardian's Cross and Deadman's Cross have done super well and continue to be top grossing titles along with the older RPGs that they consistently release. Disney and EA have had some flops, but their mobile titles still do very well. Do you frequent App Annie or similar tracking/reception sites? Zynga failed for many reasons, but the platform isn't the real issue.

The problem with bolded is that Nintendo isn't a big fish right now. The only real "big fish" people can claim is the 3DS, but even that hasn't sold very well.

I'd say the 3DS has sold quite well. Just not "great" per se.

It's on pace to break 70+ million, which isn't bad at all.

funny you mention Square they just posted profits. Due largely to the mobile division.

Ill put it this way. Even if the profits arent BIG they ar still profits and they surely wouldnt really lose money
