Forums - Nintendo - Will Nintendo's next handheld and console use Power PC like the Wii U?

well porting mobil games will be much easyer and the big 3rd partycompanies are going mobile, and in 3-4 years smartphones will be stroger than the ps4...

Will they be able to keep backwards compatability with ARM?

Backwards compatibility with the Wii U ... Nintendo's least successful and most niche console ever is not a big priority IMO. If they can ease the burden of porting games, so be it.

Price of the next handheld is much more important, one of Nintendo's biggest blunders this generation was using highly propietary components (Power PC + highly customized GPU) instead of using more economical modified off-the-shelf components.

It's why they can't make money on the Wii U even now, whereas Sony who used a more PC-like architecture is already not only profitting off the PS4 but seeing bigger than expected drops in hardware manufacturing.

No one is going to give you a sweetheart deal on components that only you use, even if they're not as powerful as what others are using.

What Nintendo is doing today is actually the antithesis of what Yamauchi did with the NES.

It was a big priority for the Wii. I doubt a 5m unit difference will break their decision on that one. They've already made it clear that making the hardware transfer as painless as possible, and keeping consumers with each new hardware generation. They don't want to hit restart with each new generation. Losing BC is the perfect way not to do that.

Each console after the NES sold less and less under Yamauchi.

Well the Wii U results speak for themselves, not only did Nintendo manage to make a console only moderately more powerful than a 7 year old XBox 360, they managed to lose money on it too.

It's time to stop making hardware based on niche ideas ... like backwards compatibility and having a console that's small and only runs at 33 watts because Japanese housewives and eco-friendlies that like low power consumption. The general gaming audience doesn't give a f*ck, yet Nintendo expended all that effort into these areas that yielded a more expensive console to mass produce.

If they want to make a console for an audience of like 10 million people though, that's their business. It's just not very good business.

There's really only 10 Wii U games that maybe are worthwhile in terms of having for BC anyway -- Mario 3D World, DKC, MK8, Smash, Zelda U, Xenoblade, Bayo 2, Splatoon ... the rest really ... if you can't live without Mario & Sonic Sochii games ... c'mon. If they can create some dev tools that make it easier to port the 10 or so Wii U games that the masses really give a crap about, then it's better to simply go with the most cost effective for power chip.

Nintendo staying niche is what makes console gaming and Nintendo relevant.

They are a small company that does not need Sony level of sales to stay profitable.

Apple has done very well for itself going their own way.  And they also lacked

"third party support" compared to their PC rivals.

Nintendo will outlast Sony and MS, those two giants are already showing cracks in their foundations.

No I'm not. It has nothing to do with the Wii U's technical ability. I think the Wii U's successor will release in 2016 because of the Wii U's selling ability. It has none. It has no future. It has Smash, then Zelda, maybe Metroid, then it's dead. There's no hope for the Wii U sales wise anymore. And this is coming from someone who prefers the Wii U to the PS4/XBO. Consumers don't want it now, and the way E3 went, they won't want it later. Nintendo gets that.

There's no way they're going to admit it because it would cannibalize sales, but they'll release a successor as soon as possible. By November of 2016, the Wii U will be four years old. If they continue to support it a year into it's successors life, that's five years of life for the Wii U. That's more than enough time.

There is a need for a Wii U successor. The Wii U won't survive until 2020. Sales will just drop and drop until there's nothing left. Nintendo can cut that loss by releasing hardware that they can sell at a profit in two years with more selling power. There's little doubt in my mind that they will be able to make a $250-$300 box by Winter 2016 that can produce graphics comparable to the PS4/XBO.

The issue becomes if they can do that while remaining backwards compatable to some extent, whether it be digital only backwards compatability or otherwise. And what happens to the 3DS/DSi library? Does that just get restarted like with the Wii to Wii U, or can they incorperate that into the new eshop as well? These are the things Nintendo needs to figure out.

Little doubt that it'll be out by 2016, though.

You are saying this like you have some insider knowledge and you don't. Just give up and admit you are just pulling this all from your ass. No way are they going  n to debt to build a console comparible to the PS4/XBO in 2016 only to have it out-classed by the next consoles. This is just asking for suicide and frankly it wont matter about EA. They are still butthurt from Nintendo backing out of the Origin store deal.

Also you are dead wrong; Smash, Zedla, Metroid, Star Fox and other potential games new and old. You honestly forget Nintendo has a huge stable of characters to choose from they don't have 3 or 4.

There is huge doubt that they can make a 300-250 dollar box and people know this. It cost for R&D. It cost to produce... it cost a lot of money to do these things.

Nintendo ain't making money these days (haven't for a while actually).

It's a wrong assumption, the difference between x86 and PowerPC is a hurdle for porting. These days it does not involve much mpre than a recompile, the same compilers are available for all major CPUs. Think for a moment about cross-buy. It means porting between PS3 and Vita is so inexpensive, that it is enough to buy one of the games. The difference between PS3 and Vita is a lot more than the CPU.

The reason why 3rd-parties don't release multiplats for WiiU isn't that is as a different CPU. More of an impact is, that the WiiU is less powerful. But most importantly games sell bad on WiiU.

As compilers are readily available for all major CPU-architectures, the only consideration is, if the CPUs can be produced:
a) reliable
b) cheap
c) in big amounts
PowerPC, x86 and ARM are currently fitting that.

But look at things like FFXV and KH3 on the XBO. Those are easy ports from the PS4, and I'm sure that the reason is because porting between the two is so easy that all they can stand to do is profit. If the Wii U was x86 instead of PowerPC, I'm sure the Wii U would be getting those games.

Porting involves a lot of headaches, but processing architecture is the least of it. Porting an application from a Linux-x86-PC to a Linux-ARM-PC does involve a lot less work, than porting it to PS4, despite the same CPU-architecture. Things like memory-stuff, filesystem and operating system present more porting issues than another CPU. That just involves a recompile and maybe (but only maybe) a few changes here and there.

If it's easier to develop for, wouldn't it be better for Nintendo to use x86?

It's not easier to develop for x86. It's not harder too. It's irrelevant for the dev, as the compiler takes care of the CPU-architecture. The reason to choose a CPU are in the hardware, not the software. Electronical connections, heat produced that have to be handled, mass production issues and so on.

Hmm. They may do a thing where they don't bring BC into the new system to make way for a gimmick less(not that BC is a gimmick), clear idea to work close with 3rd parties. Meanwhile, make the WiiU/3DS the "hub" for BC. Releasing every VC/eShop game on the both of them. I think it would keep those systems somewhat relevant while they move on with the new console.

BC is not a niche idea. It's an idea that PC's and smartphones use to universal success. You don't get to chose what games are "worthwhile." Any game someone purchases is worthwhile when it comes to BC.

Windows-PC are keeping only a limited BC. Try starting pograms for Win 3.11 in Win 8. Even with platforms that follow each other it is not always easy to keep using your programs. But not all PCs are Windows. Macs changed  CPU-architecture two times. From Motorolas 68K-CPUs to PowerPC and then from PowerPC to x86. That often involved that your old applications wouldn't run on your new Mac.

And Smartphones? How do they use BC? Do you copy your apps from your old phone to your new?

ARM is PowerPC, just for clarification so you don't get confused. Both terms are being thrown around here (Wii U cpu is ARM9).

ARM is NOT PowerPC. Stop confusing people. WiiU don't use ARM-CPUs, the DS uses an ARM9, the 3DS an ARM11.

No one is saying that it doesn't cost R&D or production. They've done it every generation and technology is getting more powerful and cheaper at an alarming rate.

No one's pulling anything out of their ass. I'm using common sense. No way are they going to build a console comparible to the PS4/XBO in 2016 only to have it out classed by the next generation? Is that a joke? That's literally what happened with the Wii U, only this would be the smart thing to do. How would any of this bring Nintendo into debt? And who brought up EA at all?

ARM is cheaper than x86. Those are your words. Nintendo would use it because it is cheaper, more efficient, and consumes less power. Those are your words. If the more expensive to manufacture PS4 is selling at a profit right now, what makes you think that it wouldn't be able to sell at a profit in two years for $300? And if ARM is such a cheaper alternative that is more efficient than x86, what makes you think that Nintendo can't make a console equal to the PS4 in power using that architecture for $300 being sold at a profit?

None of those games will do what MK8 did, and none of those games have any hope of selling the kind of consoles that Smash and Kart can. Maybe Zelda. That's it. One more console pushing game after Smash 4 won't push the Wii U out of tracking behind the GCN. No one is forgetting Nintendo's other franchises, but Nintendo's other franchises are not even remotely big enough to bring the Wii U out of the hole it's in. It positively destined to be Nintendo's worst selling console, and it's destined to have a short lifespan.
