Short answer, NO.
Sonic The Hedgehog is a game that is set in stone as maybe the 1st Really Memorable Sega Mascot game.
It defined what the Sega Genesis was capable of and lead a heavy battle cry against everything Nintendo in that generation.
As a standalone game, its originality still stands tall against many, MANY games that are released today.
Sonic 1, 2, 3, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, at least, were GREAT games. Sonic 2 being my favorite.
I always thought the Megadrive Sonic games were pretty poor. The megadrive had many far far better platformers.
In a nutshell, they're nit picking and complaining about the difficulty.
Their conclusion is people remember the series fondly because of Sega's marketing. I disagree, people remember them fondly because they're good games which they admit. Ultimately, their expectations of what should be considered a classic is too high.

Some other noteworthy Sonic games I played were Sonic Advance 1, the first Sonic Rush on DS, and Sonic Generations. All of which had good reviews.

I agree with Advance 1 and Generations! Advance 1 is my favorite handheld Sonic game, while Generations is my favorite 3D Sonic game..

No, The Last Guardian and Half Life are.
Sonic 1 was a really good game but it is Sonic 2 that is platforming perfection in my view.
Gameplay was very primitive and badly designed compared to what Nintendo had to offer. Especially the Genesis and Dreamcast games are mediocre and very far from being good games. Metacritic ratings are also much lower for Sonic games compared to Mario games.
