Short answer, NO.
Sonic The Hedgehog is a game that is set in stone as maybe the 1st Really Memorable Sega Mascot game.
It defined what the Sega Genesis was capable of and lead a heavy battle cry against everything Nintendo in that generation.
As a standalone game, its originality still stands tall against many, MANY games that are released today.
