Funnily enough we saw the opposite thing happen with the WiiU :p (at least here).

People almost universally disagreed with the guy that predicted the WiiU would sell less than 40m LT. Now we're sitting here celebrating it managing to scrape by a 60k/w baseline.

Still, predicting less than half way through the gen is almost never accurte, heck Wii U could make a PS3 like comeback, or PS4 will BOMB HARD. This probably won't happen but you never know what the future holds

I'm gonna save that post and make a similar topic in a few years.

Well all the nah sayers were only one generation off.

A lot of people simply lack the ability to imagine that unknown variables might come into play. They look at how a product is trending now and make an assumption based solely on that. They fancy themselves analysts and even go as far as pulling actual numbers out of their butts based on nothing but the limited knowledge they have of the present time. Let's call it "pulling a Pachter."

The Wii U very well might fail. But people who are DEAD CERTAIN that it will are being very ignorant.

Exactly, the only certainty is what has already occured. I could guess that the Wii U would sell 500k units tommorow and assuming all the evidence in the world say it has a 99% chance of happening, but its not a certainty until it accutally occurs.

Always fun to see things like this. Goes to show that trying to second-guess things is hard to impossible and it's not over until it's over.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Like Sony were only one generation off when they said people would rush out to buy the PS3 even if it had no games? :p (I think that's still the worst bit of PR I've ever heard)

I'm not intending to troll here, my point is, those who live in glass houses...

Well, considering that Nintendo themselves were not certain if the DS would sell, because they clearly stated it was not supposed to replace the beloved "Gameboy" brand that they denied this new handheld console to carry.

Did pretty well for that.

Now i wonder when the next Gameboy is coming out.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Gamespot's April Fools article is still the best imo, it's the precursor to the Polygon MK8 article and probably the most humbling experience they'd ever had. For anyone who has never seen this just take time to go through it.

Because people are ALWAYS scared/dont want Nintendo to dominate so they take the start as an opportunity to make the console seem less good.

Nobody in the industry expected the Wii to work except Nintendo itself. NOBODY. They won the lottery with that risky bet. The DS appeared on the peak of dedicated gaming handheld, it was going to sell well, plus it was very easy to develop.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
