Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo has made 71 Brand new Franchises Since 2001

lol at the haters

at first it was "Nintendo does not make new IP".
hater is presented with list of new IP. hater be like "um uh, well the names are crap and the majority don't even have a sequel"
hater is then shown that the majority do have sequels but then says "uh um those are e-shop games so they should not be included" or "they never left Japan" or "the developer came up with the idea while he was taking a dump so those don't count"

keep on spinning! :D

the list is to prove that Nintendo has made lots of IP over the years not if it has sequels or if they are physical copies or digital

Are you perhaps referring to me? I'm not hating on Nintendo here, I love my Wii U and the Nintendo franchises. I'm just pointing out that the majority of the games on the list are either pretty bad, or became pretty bad after a sequel or two. Many of them haven't even been heard about in over five years. And none are certainly near the size and scope of Zelda or Mario.

There are a few gems in there, though. Pikmin and Animal Crossing are among my favorite games.

It's not bad, but at the same time, I can't help but think they'd probably be better off making half that number but making new IP that are more marketable.

A lot of these concepts are pretty much destined to niche-ville.

You'd be better off investing in one new type of IP that goes on to become like an Uncharted or something.

You never know. And some of them are successes: Animal Crossing, Tomodachi-series and Pushmo have lasting success (and I hope Xenoblade too, we will see).

The Wii-series, Big Brain Academy and Nintendogs all were big million-sellers, that Uncharted never will reach, although their time of success is over now as it looks.

While many clueless gamers claim that Nintendo does not make new franchises or IPs.  Mii-Gamer has rounded up all the new IPs Nintendo has made since 2001. And it reveals that Nintendo made over 70 new IPs in the time span.

Thanks for the work. Some corrections though:

I wouldn't count Big Brain Academa and Brain Age as different IPs.

Friend Collection is IMHO Tomodachi Collection, the predecessor of Tomodachi life and hence the same IP.

Hotel Dusk wasn't from Nintendo. Is Trace Memory the other game from CING? If then the same applies.

Denpa Men (already three games) on the other hand IS from Nintendo (at least Genius Sonority is affiliated with Nintendo like Creatures Inc. and Pokemon is always counted as nintendo IP).

Edit: I realized Art Academy is also missing.

Really? And how many of these 71 franchises are still relevant today? Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Xenoblade (not a Nintendo-created franchise), Splatoon (yet to be released), Nintendogs (kinda), and Tomodachi Life? Even counting Xenoblade (not a Nintendo-created franchise), only 6 out of 71 are considerably relevant today.

That's less than 10%.

Well some of their franchises are 20-30 years old and still going strong. Some in that list are new games, so we dont know how much they will be supported. Its more than 6/71 from that list though.

I'm referring to their recent franchises since 2001, which is what the article mentioned. Nintendo (and a lot of other devs) tend to throw new stuff at the wall and hope it sticks. Nothing wrong with that, but let's not pretend that they lovingly nurture their franchises into poularity.

And the only other relevant new game that has a chance of a sequel that I see is Wonderful 101, which recieved lukewarm sales at best. There are only 5 new major franchises on the list on the 3DS/WiiU, and out of them only Tomodachi Life has seen considerable success (Splatoon is not out yet).

I just listed the 6 I felt were relevant. You might be able to include the Wii-series as well, but that's still 7 out of 71, which is less than 10% yet.

Although pretty new Dillon's Western, Denpa Men, Pushmo, the Tomodachi-IP already got sequels (Denpa Men was missed from the OP). Similarily OP is missing Art Academy that get's also new entries. Franchises like Brain Age may not be successful as they were, but they got sequels this gen. A not too small part of this list consists of titles in current gen, so they might get sequels later (I already named them if they got sequels): Ketzals corridors, W101, Hana Samurai and so on. Your 10% picture is flawed. Take IPs from GC , DS and Wii and look honestly for sequels on current gen to get a better picture.

  • Pikmin -> 2013
  • Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem
  • Animal Crossing -> 2012
  • Battalion Wars
  • Chibi-Robo -> 2014
  • Art Style -> 2010
  • Wii series -> 2014 (Wii Sports Club)
  • Endless Ocean -> 2009
  • Xenoblade Chronicles -> 2015
  • The Last Story -> (first game was in the last 6 years)
  • Wonderful 101 -> (first game in the last six years)
  • Splatoon -> (first game yet to be released)
  • Golden Sun
  • Kuririn
  • Starfy
  • Rhythm Tengoku -> 2011/2012
  • Nintendogs -> 2011
  • Big Brain Academy
  • Brain Age -> 2012 (also the same IP as Big Brain Academy in my book)
  • Clubhouse Games
  • Elite Beat Agents
  • Hotel Dusk: Room 215
  • Trace Memory
  • Soma Bringer
  • Fossil Fighters -> announced for future release
  • Codename S.T.E.A.M -> first game yet to be released
  • Steel Diver -> 2013
  • Tomodachi Life -> 2014 (is successor to Tomodachi Collection)
  • Harmo Knight
  • Pushmo -> 2014
  • Dillon’s Rolling Western -> 2013
These games are either newer IPs, popular franchises or got a great score.

And yet the vast majority will never see a sequel. Not really keeping a franchise afloat if the first game is the only game.

Bolded all games that have 2 or more games in the franchise.

And how many of them have had any sort of sequel in the last few years? A lot of them had a mediocre sequel that ended the franchise. A lot of those franchises haven't seen a new game in 6+ years.

I count 14 IP's that had sequels in the last 6 years. Much more than your six. I don't know about some of these games, so it might be more. Add to this the completely new IPs like Splatoon, that you can't call dead if they have just released one game or not even have released the first game.

Nintendo bought an 80% stake in Monolith in 07, long before Xenoblade was announced. They didn't "fully" own them, but they had the controlling stake.

80% share does mean controlling share, yes, but it doesn't make them first-party, not quite. Namco-Bandai, I believe, owned the majority of the rest of the share, so they had some control over the future of the company. It wasn't until 2011 that Nintendo bought them out completely, thus making them fully under control of Nintendo.

Edit:  "Namco Bandai is considering the sale as a way to strengthen its relationship with Nintendo and is not entirely ending its involvement with Monolith Soft. Namco Bandai will retain 16 percent of the developer's shares and will continue to count the studio among its partners. "

They were fully under control of Nintendo in 07. You don't have to own 100% of a company to control them. Even now Monolith's managers own a few shares in the studio.

14/71 is still roughly less than 20%. I was off with my 10% remark, yes, but I'll stand by my original point of Nintendo being unable to replicate the success of games like Zelda and Mario. There are a few games that did very well, like Animal Crossing and Pikmin, but the majority are no longer very relevant now.

I already admitted that they controlled them for the most part. However, Namco kept a significant share in order to keep "involvment" with the studio, which signifies that the studio still was under some degree of influence from Namco, and not 100% privately owned by Nintendo, as a first party studio generally is.

That's not really how share holding works. When you own 80% of the company, you own the company except for minor board control by others. 80% means that they have majority and any decision they make, they make as the majority and it is the decision that is made barring some ultimatum veto in the system. When it comes to the development of games therein, Namco can make some claims or ideas and put them on the table as share holders. Nintendo has all the power of letting something through or not, though, because of their majority. Anything that goes on in Monolith is "Nintendo Approved".

If Nintendo decides to turn Monolith Soft into a company that makes plushies for cancer victims, then Monolith Soft starts making plushies.
