I'm sure that is what people have been doing, when they look at Sony's new IP on PS3 and then Nintendos New IPs on Wii, my god, Wii era, barely any new IP.

This has got to be a joke. Nintendo published considerably more new IP during the Wii and DS era than Sony did.

# of new IP's: 88. Of which:

11 IP's are yet to be released
14 are typically Million sellers (per entry)
15 scoring between 75-79 at Metacritic
14 scoring from 80-89
5 IP's typically score over 90 (Uncharted, LBP, The Last of Us, Flower and Journey)
5 are heavily criticized/panned (55 or lower metacritic)
9 are unrated.

Do you still honestly believe Nintendo published "considerably more" IP's within the same time frame? I think no matter how you slice it, Sony is doing the better job here especially with home consoles.

And for the record, this list only includes Sony's owned IP's. This explains why Heavy Rain, for example, isn't listed.

I stand corrected.

But  for one thing I disagree with OP's take that "Wii series" is one franchise.

I consider Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Wii Music, Wii Party, and Wii Play seperate franchises, each with seperate structures and sequels.

Another thing is that unreleased IPs really should be left out from lists like these. We don't know how far off they are, if others will be revealed, or if some will be canceled (hopefully very few will).

This makes the numbers nearly equal, and while I'm not correct in saying Nintendo' s released "considerably more new IPs", Ali_16x is also not correct in stating that Nintendo has released "barely any new IPs" compared to  Sony. Or compared to anyone. Nintendo and Sony are both far ahead of any other major publisher in the "new IPs" game, with the one enigmatic exception of Ubisoft.

Wait I'm confused, a lot of those are from third party developers.

Obviously. Most games from most publishers are made by third-party developers.

The way I see it is as follows: take for example Ratchet and Clank and Gears of War. Sure Sony and MS own them, but Insomniac and Epic came up with them, so I don't credit their creation to the publisher. Maybe I'm just being anal.

You'd be using the terms in a way that's different than everyone else, yes. I don't think such a narrow description does anyone much good.
