Forums - Gaming - Putting the PC cost argument to rest

So I'll throw in my two cents...

I think that PC gaming is best for me, because I like to play a lot of older games. With (mostly) GOG and Steam now carrying a lot of older titles and (mostly) ensuring compatibility with more recent operating systems, I can do that pretty easily.

I spent $900 on my computer, including the cost of extras (mouse, headset, monitor, etc), and it can play most games on high settings, save for the newest releases. (Skyrim on ultra, plus mods? Yes please!) Mods are also huge for me; I can tweak the game to make it look how I want it, and I can extend the life of a game dramatically.

Plus, the cost of games is great. Some companies (Activision, EA) don't discount their titles as much as they could, but... there are some insane deals out there. I have spent $130 on games this year. From that, I got 48 games. Yes, 48. (Knock off 20 games and $30 if you want to exclude titles from the early 2000s/late1990s). That's pretty fantastic, and includes all three Bioshock games for $10 during the last Steam sale. Since I have such a huge backlog of games now, I don't need to keep up with the newest releases, and I can wait for them to drop in price.

I won't say that PC gaming is for everyone. I love my PS3, and consoles are not without their advantages. But I'm very much a PC gamer first these days.

Why is that likely? Who would have an interest to forbid them to supply the demand? Monolith Soft? They would get their cut of the additional sales!

And it has not even to be a retail version. Why not offer the game in the eShop, downloadable to Wii and Wii U consoles?

Monolith Soft would have final say in whether they could reprint it. Nintendo only distributed and published it. The set agreement would have been for X retail copies. This would require a new agreement.

They won't bring it to Wii U eShop any time soon for one reason, it diverts resources from the sequal that is coming.

And what prevents Monolith Soft and Nintendo to make a new agreement about a reprint? These renegotiations happen every day in the software industry, don't act like it's something unthinkable. In this special case, it would even be a win-win-situation.

Why is offering a retail title additionally as download title (which is even more profitable) "diverting resources"? It would even be good advertisement for the sequel.

Because the Wii Shop doesn't support it and the Wii version of the game has to be ported to Wii U. It's not a quick port job. It diverts resources that could be used elsewhere

Interesting topic, but let's remember why consoles are so popular while PCs decline, eh? Even though PCs have the freedom to build into many forms and prices, you need knowledge for this. People like simplicity. Console is just plug-and-play.

Even though there's a debate around 1080p/60fps nowadays, most people don't care so much and just want the games to look cool. And consoles games look very cool.

So, as long as you have to say "PC is cheaper, all you have to do is bla bla bla bla" you added a lot of explanations that the market don't want to think about. While we, the niche market, care about such details, people just want something to spend their time or let their children entertained.

Exactly this. And this is what I have been trying to say. This is a niche topic for a niche market. The only people that will care enough about this are people that care enough about gaming to know these kinda things or spend this kinda time on forums. And even amongst those people a majority of them either only own or also own a console. The second you start saying these things to the person that thinks an iphone is the most cutting edge tech in the world, or that LED tvs are a special type of new Tv and completely new better tech than LCD tvs..etc; you would have lost them.

We can talk value, performance...etc all day, but the average consumer is really blind to these things. For a very long time a lot of people thought that simply plugging a device to a HDTV meant that anything you were watching was "In HD". Even if using composite cables. Consoles sell for their simplicity. And even now they are getting a lot of flak with the amount of patches and updates they require but these days things like that have become the norm too.

There is no doubt and no argument that there is value in PC gaming. But its discussion is like telling members of a boxing club what kinda gloves are best to use.

The problem with that, the Wii is unsupported. Unless they (Nintendo) do a limited run of the game (which they wont), the price of Xenoblade will never go down. The supply is just not there, so the demand will increase the price dramatically.

They likely aren't allowed to produce more units, and likely wont with the sequal coming

Dude, you should check who Monolith Soft belongs to and maybe then you'd realise they have no say whatsoever on this matter. All your "they can't" arguments are bs. If Nintendo wanted to do anything with the game, they'd do it, they can release another print any time they see fit and nothing or nobody on this planet can stop them.

Is e-shop even a bigger piece of garbage than I thought it was? It really takes that much effort to put a game on it, that it would steal resources from games in development!? Yikes!

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

PCs are actually GAINING in popularity, not losing. And they are easier to build than evver due to PC Partpicker, or you can have a webssite build it for you for just a small premium.

Except PC is nowwhere near a niche market. Do you realise how many people use Steam now? Your statement is ignorant beyond belief.

I have an active steam account. From 10 years ago. That I havent used since. Id like to know exactly how they came up with that number. Throwaway accounts ect.

Also, calling someones post ignorant because they have a different opinion is pretty dense, and not very good communication skills.

I didn't call him ignorant, I called his statement ignorant. A very big difference. And his statement was very ignorant.

And I'm talking about current Steam users. This summer, there were over 8 million people online simultaneously on Steam. And that's only the people that were logged in at that moment. An entire one million over the last record, which was last winter. PC gaming is growing faster than ever, and is not a niche market.

You are right. It's not a niche market. Even with PC sales decline, PC games are stronger than ever. But my statement is also nowhere near ignorant.

There's a lot of 'buts' when talking about PCs. I still think that everything that have more options is also more complex. So... Yes, it's not cost-prohibitive, but what about cost-benefit for people who just want a simpler answer?

PS4 is more powerful than most PC, while also cheaper and simpler. But yes, if you research, if you find more elegant ways to put a PC on your living room (like streaming to a smart tv), if you buy a joystick, if you are accustomed to downloading games, then you have a very good cost-benefit. But that's A LOT of ifs and not all of then, don't you think? I don't think such amenities can be ignored. When we talk about the PC cost, we have to compare side-by-side to consoles so we can understand what they fear so much.

So the PC cost argument is not so easy to 'rest'.

I wasn't referring your post, I was referring to the one after that I directly quoted.

And gaming PC sales are up, even though consumer desktop sales are down. Not to mention almost any a lot of graphics card bought within the last two years is already more powerful than the PS4, which is based on the 7870, a budget mid end card from 2 years ago.
