Forums - Nintendo - So Mario Kart 8 Isn't Going To Give The Wii U Even 1 Month At 100k+ In The US?

Looking at the predictions thread for the upcoming June NPD it seems like even most ardent Nintendo fans here are resigned to sub-100k sales for the Wii U in June ... so basically the Mario Kart 8 impact was ... err, not so good?

I really loved Nintendo's E3, but that's basically curtains for the Wii U is it not? I mean Mario 3D World, Wii Fit U, Donkey Kong Country, Wii Sports Club, Pikmin 3, Sonic, and now Mario Kart 8 have all come and gone ... if they still can't get over 100k for a month ... I think most if not all hope is lost. Even the GameCube could fairly regularily top 100k in North America even without a new release, if the Wii U can't even do that in the midst of Mario Kart ... that's just shockingly bad.

There's been an improvement in sales in Japan too, but not really anything to get too excited over.

Smash Bros. will help, but honestly if MK8 can't do more than this, then the system is basically done for barring an Amiibo miracle, or Splatoon becoming a new Pokemon like hit. Oh well as long as I gets me some Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade X, and Star Fox U, I'll be relatively pleased with my purchase.

I think it's time to accept reality here. The Wii-U is the next Dreamcast. And by that, I don't mean that Nintendo is finished as a console maker. I think the Wii-U is going to be viewed in much the same light as the Dreamcast is viewed today. It's going to be a cult hit, with the mainstream community ignoring it entirely. Then in about 10 years, people are going to look back at it's library and think to themselves "wtf?!? How did we NOT support this machine?!?!"

My advice? Enjoy it and ignore sales like I did with Dreamcast. Time will vindicate your purchase.

I look back at the Dreamcast as a console that just wasn't as good as the PS1.

Ummmm what is 25,000 x 4?.........................................................................................................................

TADA 100,000

So since a MK8's release the 4 weeks ago, it looks like
41,000
33,000
26,000
20,000
That is 120,000 units
Sounds like they hit a 100,000 to me.

Well I guess in response to that I'd say "how different is Nintendo from Sony and Microsoft really?"

They're not really. The main difference between the companies is Nintendo opts to tailor their business philosophies first and foremost as a family game provider. Not because they give a sh*t about raising your kids, but because it's been a reliable business tactic for them since the 1980s.

Sony's philisophy is to tailor their marketing from the 21 year old onwards with the belief that younger kids tend to want to play the same games their older brother is playing.

People who are still obsessed with console wars don't get it. They don't get what's happening with the industry. These are petty pissing matches that even the companies themselves don't do anymore. Nintendo does not take shots at Sony and Sony does not take shots at Nintendo, I mean for crying out loud MS ran a 'what's your favorite Zelda game' on their official Twitter account during E3.

What do I think about people who think Nintendo needs to be more like MS and Sony? Well in a broad sense, I think they are probably living in a different decade if they still think that dynamic is what defines the game business today, because it's not.

As far as competition goes though, you should never be too proud or arrogant as a company (I don't care what company you are) that you feel you can't learn anything from anyone else or that your sh*t smells like perfume. Don't ever believe your own hype in other words. There's nothing wrong with Nintendo learning a thing or two from Sony or MS, no one company in this business has a monopoly on all the good ideas.

Soundwave, I like you.

I still think that the Wii U still has a slight chance of selling relatively well, though. When it hits the right price range (and even more so when the PS360 are no longer in the market to compete with it for that price rage).

There's the Soundwave I know! All your Nintendo positivity recently was really starting to worry me.

As for the topic question, let's see how Mario Kart does in June NPD. There have been a lot of people saying the console has been sold out so who knows? Maybe it'll climb over 100k for a month.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Depends on what you mean by underperform though...

NSMBU has sold over 4 million. Thats about 65% of the install base.
MK8 has sold over 2 million in a month. Thats about 33% of the install base.

Dont see any PS4 or XB1 games hitting that percentage.

well yeah. To be fair its not really nothing to boast about when the system itself has such a low install base. As for the others Didnt the PS4 version of Watchdogs outsell MK8 by itself so its def in the ballpark.

Im not boasting. Cant really expect a game to sell 10 million copies on a console with 6.5 million units sold...

Thats true, i see that you are trying to look on the bright side and thats fine. BUt bringing up any install base isnt really gonna help because it will always go back to how well the console is doing and the WIi U isnt doing hot so there really isnt much spin one can do there. So talks of install base is kinda pointless IMHO especially when said software isnt doing much for hardware

I think the software is doing a great deal for the system. I mean how much would the WiiU sell now without MK8, NSMBU and 3D World? Probably waaaaaaaay less.

MK8 especially has given the WiiU a good boost in sales and it seems to continue. Could be more, but the MK8 WiiU bundle seems to be sold out in alot of places. Im positive about the WiiU because I think its a great system and people will discover that as soon as they get some time with one.

I also think it will sell more than the GC because Nintendo seems to be doing alot of great stuff with it and the games they release. Maybe not in the next 2 years, but even the people who doesnt think the WiiU is worth it right now, will probably get one cheap at the end of its lifecycle to play many of the great and unique games it will have by that time:)

"Basically curtains for the Wii U"

"Most if not all hope is lost"

"The system is basically done for"

Ur acting like Nintendo is going to all of a sudden discontinue the Wii U and can all games in development for it because Mario Kart didnt give it a 100k month in the US (which has not been confirmed).

I still really liked their E3, thought they did a great job and deserve credit there for sure. Just for my own gaming tastes I'm quite happy with my Wii U purchase and it's my most played system.

I also don't think things are all roses for the PS4 either ... it's starting to trend very definitely below the PS2 at the same point in its life span and the launch hype has definitely worn off. This industry really isn't a great place to be right now at least in terms of the five traditional platforms (PS4, Wii U, XB1, 3DS, Vita).

I know people tired of the "doom" talk, but there are some really negative trends in the overall business that are very hard to just gloss over. I'm starting to wonder if any system will break 100 mill this cycle, if the answer is no that will be the first time that's happened in the industry since the SNES-Genesis days.

Nintendo Land = Wii Sports (the game that shows off the usage of the controller through various family friendly mini-games)

I've played Nintendo Land. It is not Wii Sports like in any way, shape, or form. I'm actually prepared to argue that it's just a bad game overall, to be honest, but that's an aside to the topic.

What developer wants to make games they dont want to make...?

A developer who wants to keep his job. Because, you know, if you lose your job, you'll never get to make a game that you want to make.

Yeah, Im sure Miyamoto has one foot out the door...lol

Iwata is arguably closer to that than any major Nintendo developer since Yokoi. And if Nintendo didn't enter this generation with such a massive warchest from its prior generations, many of its employees would be in that precise position. See the Game Industry Deathwatch that's continuing to devour publishers and developers.

But Rol's overall point remains: making games is a job, not a hobby. This job entails selling $60 software to folks who are often reluctant to do so. What the developer "wants" has as much value as what the cashier at a retail store "wants": the paying customer is all that's important.

Who cares?  There are a ton great games out for the Wii U.    The public has bought a sh*tload of Miley Cyrus albums, doesn't make it good music.    As long as Nintendo keeps making great games, it's all good.
