Forums - Gaming - Did EA mishandle the Titanfall IP?

If they mishandled it at all, it would be not giving Respawn enough money for development, leading to Respawn having to rely on MS to fund development to complete the game.

That said, who can honestly know. CoD 2 never came to PS3 or Wii last gen, yet it went on to become a pretty big franchise last gen.

don't know about CoD2 being the reason that franchise got big though.  Played most of those COds prior to Modern warfare and they were all fun but rather meh.  Modern Warfare took them to new heights though and that was multiplat.  just saying.

well seeing how ms saved the game by giving them money it doesn't matter for all we know if ms never stepped in there wouldn't be a titanfall due to ea not putting in more money

Titanfall had its chance, nobody will care by the second one.

Titanfall is an xbox console exclusive, we all know that.. but seeing how it is that any future Titanfall IPs will no longer be exclusive to the xbox console, do you think EA is ultimately hurting/potentially stymed the IP by making the first title an exclusive and shunning the playstation community who would of also bought the game?  Adding, because of some of the negative public perception of the game, like the limited game modes, high cost/low content, lacking single player, 6v6, bots, graphics, etc.. this could also create an even more skeptical outlook on any future installments by the playstation community in general.  Granted, there would still be folks on playstation that would buy TF2, but at the same time, many of the playstation community could also choose to turn away from the IP because of the way they were dropped by EA for the first title.  I personally feel, as a PS gamer, being shunned by the 1st title, why would I buy the 2nd title?  Because I don't have the first title, what's the story or lore leading up to the 2nd?  What did I miss out?  Questions like these and other games available at the time of TF2's release could ultimately sway mine and other people's mind when it comes to whether or not to purchase.  This is where I think EA mishandled the Titanfall IP.  Not only did they just ignore a big gaming community by choosing exclusivity, the decision EA ultimately made (because Titanfall 1 was originally meant to go multiplat) will cause the franchise to not be as big as it could be, especially when talking about wanting a COD killer IP.  Regardless of what MS did, EA agreed to the terms.  What do you guys think?

P.S.  I don't want no flaming/trolling and console x is better than console y type convo.  Just want to know your opinions as to how EA handled Titanfall and if their decision of exclusivity could ultimately hurt the TF franchise and any future multiplat installments.

First of all EA hasn't even said anything about titanfall 2 coming to ps4 and second Microsoft saved the IP otherwise tittanfall wouldn't even excist and I'm sure if Microsoft want to keep tittanfall 2 exclusive they will

that's besides the point though.  So MS helped fund the game and got timed exclusivity.  That's fine.. But then afterwards EA makes it a lifetime console exclusive.. that's where I believe EA potentially screwed up considering the IP itself will eventually end up on other systems.

but see it from ms point of view they put the money why should sony benfit from it for all we know the money that they got from ms for going exclusive was needed for the game(i cant remember if that was talked about or not)

They did exactly the right thing. People still talk about this game every day on sites like VGC just because it's exclusive on Microsoft platforms. When Titanfall 2 will release it will sell a huge amount simply because people think "the most talked about game of all time in gaming forums, I need to try the successor"

But at least it went on PC and Xbox platforms and not on VIta like Sony wanted. That would have been bad...

Respawn actually went to Sony first for Titanfall. But Sony stayed tightlipped on the specs of the PS4 to Respawn. Instead, offering them to put their game on the Vita instead.

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-and-pc-game-titanfall-was-originally-prototyped-running-on-a-ratchet-clank-engine/1100-6419042/

The original game ran on Insomniacs "Luna" Ratchet and Clank engine. This was Sony's snafu that the game found it's way as an exclusive on MS systems, and PC.

But there's Titanfall 2 to look forward to.

Respawn went to sony at a time when sony weren't even sure about what would go into the PS4, and didnt want to give out any specs of their upcoming system. Nothing wrong there. And honestly, considering how the IP has done so far? Its not a big deal, TF2 will come to the PS and if it doesn't then thats ok too.

To OP, EA doesn't own the IP, so they have no obligations to fund the game if they don't want to. Should EA have had more faith in their new partner? Of course, but as far as EA were concerned, the game was releasing on the XB1/360/PC. They probably felt there was enough there to at leats hit 10M in sales. EA has a history of always backing the wrong horse. Ad they do some very strange things, so this should not be surprising to anyone. I mean, when was the last time EA handled any IP properly? They seem hell bent on churning out mediocre IPS, then buying rights for those IPs so no one else can compete with them in the same space (looking at you fifa/madden).

well.. if that's the case, then wouldn't it be better to keep it as xbox plat exclusive for all future titles.  I'm just saying.. regardless if xbox funded the game, EA sold the exclusivity.  My point is, by going exclusive for their first title, did EA screw up their chance of having a potential "COD Killer" type IP?  I'm not saying any future titles will not sell, just saying their actions could of potentially pushed away sales from the sony plat.  And by ignoring one gamer base, like I said, what makes that gamer base care about the sequel(s), especially if by that point, more titles could be available on all platforms and they will all be fighting for sales.  COD,BF,Destiny,PS2,etc.. it's going to be shooter saturated by the time the next Titanfall releases..
