Zelda and Alundra are both Action Adventure games with RPG elements. The Seiken Densetsu series , Kingdom Hearts, and the Soul Blazer Trilogy are RPGs with action-adventure elements. |
Do you really want to argue over this? There is a marginal difference in play style. They are all almost identical games.
Action RPG is a term that got invented in the 3D era.
If it is now a RPG with action adventure elements or an action adventure with RPG elements, who cares. Isnt that the same thing anyways?

One is a RPG and the other one is an Action game if you want to put it in plain terms. |
Then lets call the genre "Lets walk around and hit stuff, and sometimes get new stuff to hit the moving stuff with". God, this is tiresome. tell me again, what is the different GAMEPLAY MECHANIC between those games? There is none.

| Faxanadu said: I started thinking that I really miss my favorite genre. The games I grew up with and really played hours upon hours. Games like Secret of Mana, Terranigma, Illusion of Gaia, A Link to the Past, Allundra, Chrono Trigger. Even lesser entries like Soulblazer. Why is no one producing such glorious games anymore? The simple and straight forward stories, the wonderful graphics, the precision gameplay, not having to worry about unprecise 3D-movement? I hope a link between worlds is half as good as all those glorious gems. If so, I am in for a real treat. Any indie games I need to check out? Any developer who has the balls to take on the greatest game genre ever conceived? |
Buy some DS rpgs then.

You are so right.
In one you beat the boss of the dungeon, then a chest appears and your health bar increases.
In the other you beat the boss of the dungeon, and get points for it, which makes your level go up and your health bar increases.
So much difference. And in one you walk around and hit stuff, and in the other you only walk around and hit stuff.

Also there is no health bar in the Seiken Densetsu series, Chrono Trigger or Terranigma. Your stats go up from leveling up despite whether you fight a boss or not. I've killed bosses in Terranigma and didnt level up so your sarcastic logic fails on this one. You also walk around and hit stuff in Super Mario games and GTA, I guess they are also RPGs. |
You level up as you progress. If you do that by collecting points/money to get stronger/buy new stuff or by finding new gadgets /hearts on your way is rather irrelevant. Both times you grow stronger and enemies that used to be a threat become a nuissance.
If your health bar is an arbitrary number that reduces to zero vs. hearts that reduce to zero vs. apples that reduce to zero, vs. rupies that reduce to zero or a green line that reduces to zero - how on earth is that different? Of course there is a health bar in all those games.
And please dont make an assumption of the RPGs I have or have not played. I am very well aware of what is a classic RPG and what not. And clearly all the games I mentioned are not RPGs. Except of course CT, which is an obvious RPG.

Obduction releases in 2015. Made by Cyan Worlds who made Myst and Riven.

So clearly you believed Chrono Trigger and The Legend of Zelda are in the same genre which is of course wrong. The only games on that list in your OP that are not RPGs are Alundra and The Legend of Zelda A Link To The Past - all the rest are RPGs. You are mixing your nostalgia with the lack of knowledge of what each game's genre clearly is. Action RPGs are RPGs. Action-Adventure games are a form of Action games. They are sub genres, nothing more - nothing less. You also grow stronger by wearing body armor and getting better weapons in GTA, still that doesnt make it the same as The Legend of Zelda, Chrono Trigger, Mana series or the Soul Blazer Trilogy. |
Dont berate me on my knowldge of anything. What makes you believe you can do that?
I am well aware that CT is a stretch on that list as I have stated multiple times in this threat.
I have also stated that action RPG did not exist in that time but rather is an invention of the 3D age.
What does GTA have to do with anything?
Let someone play all the games (except for CT) and ask them if they play similarly. They will say yes. so it is the same genre. Whether AA or RPG elements are a bit more pronounced in one or the other, who cares?
Please stop beinbg so anal about a mere technicality of levelling-up system. It is a secondary gameplay mechanic that does not change the way you play the games, i.e. almost identical.

Whether the term was coined in one era or another is irrelevant - the industry considers them two separate genres. Your comparison of a health bar and equipment making characters stronger was what my example of GTA was alluding to. They might play in the same PoV but are not the same genre - Ninja Gaiden NES and Super Mario Bros are not the same genre yet they play in the same PoV. The Legend of Zelda and Alundra are an action-adventure games in their own respect while the rest are RPGs. There may of been inspirations but clearly they are two different genres. Also reported for that insult, why are you spewing profanity when I'm just having a normal conversation with you? Its not a mere technicality of a game engine. One is clearly leveling you up like how a RPG is suppose to be mixed with fighting constant enemies to little to no puzzles - the other one plays more like an action game where your abilities improve based on your equipment/items and mostly focus on exploration/exploitation of the environment to progress through the game. They are not identical - not even close. Your nostalgic feelings prevent you from differentiating the two genres. |
where did i insult you?

The next two years, 1986 and 1987, would see the release of games that would further define the action/RPG genre in Japan. An important influence on the genre was the 1986 action-adventure, The Legend of Zelda had many features in common with RPGs and served as the template for future action RPGs.[31]
your source.
look at the soul blazer triology: 2 of 3 have a health bar.
