where did i insult you?

The anal part, there was no need for such a comment even if in a heat of a conversation such as this. We are not talking money, politics or religion here.

I still dont see an insult. Another good example of you taking something too anal, i.e. too word for word.

Dont berate me on my knowldge of anything. What makes you believe you can do that?

I am well aware that CT is a stretch on that list as I have stated multiple times in this threat.

I have also stated that action RPG did not exist in that time but rather is an invention of the 3D age.

What does GTA have to do with anything?

Let someone play all the games (except for CT) and ask them if they play similarly. They will say yes. so it is the same genre. Whether AA or RPG elements are a bit more pronounced in one or the other, who cares?

Please stop beinbg so anal about a mere technicality of levelling-up system. It is a secondary gameplay mechanic that does not change the way you play the games, i.e. almost identical.

So I should bow down and assume you are almighty and correct when you are clearly wrong? The Legend of Zelda and those other games excluding Alundra are not in the same category of a gametype.

Whether the term was coined in one era or another is irrelevant - the industry considers them two separate genres.

Your comparison of a health bar and equipment making characters stronger was what my example of GTA was alluding to.

They might play in the same PoV but are not the same genre - Ninja Gaiden NES and Super Mario Bros are not the same genre yet they play in the same PoV. The Legend of Zelda and Alundra are an action-adventure games in their own respect while the rest are RPGs. There may of been inspirations but clearly they are two different genres.

Also reported for that insult, why are you spewing profanity when I'm just having a normal conversation with you? Its not a mere technicality of a game engine. One is clearly leveling you up like how a RPG is suppose to be mixed with fighting constant enemies to little to no puzzles - the other one plays more like an action game where your abilities improve based on your equipment/items and mostly focus on exploration/exploitation of the environment to progress through the game.

They are not identical - not even close. Your nostalgic feelings prevent you from differentiating the two genres.

and one more: also your source:

Other action RPGs at the time combined the puzzle-oriented action-adventure gameplay style of the Zelda series with RPG elements. Examples include Illusion of Gaia (1993) and its successor Terranigma (1995), as well as Alundra (1997), a spiritual successor to LandStalker.

I think OP is just trying to say he wants something sort of like this:

It's more the mechanics within these specific games rather than the genre itself. They usually involve top down camera angles, swords with which to hammer enemies, worlds that involve lush forests and puzzle ridden temples. There's also usually a natural progression of strength, whether from leveling up from enemy encounters or receiving new weapons/items that makes the game considerably easier. I don't agree that these all remain within a single genre but I understand how he's trying to make a connection between them.

Thanks. Exactly my point. Cross out the one in the upper left and you even have a genre. Read on Wikipedia regarding Zelda / AA / Action RPG and you will realize it is all one genre. As stated, without CT.

Sorry, just to clarify to you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anal_retentiveness

Again, it is not an insult.

They still exists. They're just relabeled as indie games.

I miss puzzle adventurer's like Myst, the 7th Hour and the 11th Guest...though, I think the Witness will be kind of reviving that genre.

A new Myst-game is in the works: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cyaninc/obduction

And have you already played the other Myst games? Riven, Exile, Uru, End of Ages. The "Masterpiece Edition" of "realMyst" (Windows + Mac + iOS) is also very good... much prettier than the old realMyst. "Outcry: The Dawn" also is very Myst-like.

The 7th Guest and 11th Hour were mainly puzzle games with a story arc and trashy video sequences. If you want good puzzle games connected by a nice story: all Professor Layton games (DS + 3DS) and Jacob Jones (PS Vita + iOS). If it's a funny story and trash FMVs: Tex Murphy - Tesla Effect.

"The 7th Guest 3: The Collector" is already planned, but they failed twice trying to crowdfund it.

Glad to hear Myst is making a comeback, a very entertaining and challenging game (at least when I was in my early teens lol, same with the 7th Guest/11th Hour.  Yeah, they had some trashy video sequences, but the story arc was pretty good, especially the overwhelming frustration of having a creepy disembodied voice making fun of all your failures haha.

But yeah, I've played the rest of the Myst games, haven't played Prof Layton, Jacob Jones or Tex Murphy...will have to check those out.  Appreciate the heads up :)
