You forgot to take two things into account.

1. NSMB2 came out in the same year as NSMBU, MK7 came about 2 1/2 years before MK8.

2. Wii U was at 0 when NSMBU launched, it was over 6 million when MK8 launched.

Still, you're right about what you said!

As long as the Wii U remains under gamecube levels, it's dead and, while I'm not at the very least surprised, you left out some important details surrounding MK8 release.

If back in 2010 you were to say that the next iteration of Mario Kart would have be bundled from the get-go, include a free game and that there would be a worldwide, unofficial price cut after 5 days due to the game being massively overshipped, the internet would have came crashing down...and that is exactly what's going on.

The game in the past has shown it has appear, the game tends to sell to about 1/3 of console users, but it will do nothing to change the fortunes of the system that came out 18 months ago.

NSMB is the type of game that rode the wave of success on the Wii. It also had the first-2D-Mario-Game-On-A-Console-in-18- years factor. NSMB U came at a time when the Wii U wasn't hyped at all and just after 2 Mario games got released on the 3DS in the last year (4 in the last 3 years including the Wii). Nintendo's decision was horrible imo.

All those favourite Nintendo franchises will help Wii U sell as high as Gamecube. But what will help Wii U sell higher than that? Or is Gamecube good enough?

So, um did I miss something here or is this thread about overreacting to MK8s effect on Wii U sales after we got 2 weeks of data once again?

If you make lame hardware your hardware sales will be lame. Which in turn will make the software sales lame. Everything about the U and it's games is lame so it's no wonder it's doing so lame.

Not trying to be negative here, you're right MK8 is a much better game (NSMBU is lame) but I think this OP doesnt make a valid argument about the success of MK8.

1) We don't have enough data points to be talking about how strong sales will continue to be.  The little we have is also unconfirmed.
2) MK8 released with an established user base compared to NSMBU.

So really beside being a better game, theres the existing user base, the fact Nintendo has marketed MK8 more than anything, the MK8 bundle, the free game with the purchase of MK8, the price cut...  It ought to sell, but let's face it May NPD wasn't very good.

So your MK8 graph is made with 2 points? Make a new one in a few weeks. You may have a point, but right now your graph doesn't proves anything.

I don't think that NSMBU is a lame game.

It's just that the popularity of Mario Kart has eclipsed the popularity of the New Super Mario Bros series. NSMBU is very good at what it does, it's just that most people prefer the 3D Mario games and prefer Mario Kart to that..

Both are good though conservative incremental updates on past games. Aside from the fact that NSMBU had disappointing graphics I don't agree with your initial claims. They are very much in the same category whilst its the zeldas and 3d Marios where Nintendo tend to innovate and push things forwards.
