There is no easy fix for Nintendo I don't think.

Motion gaming isn't that popular anymore. All the motion gaming IP are dying or dead, with Just Dance being the last of the lot. Motion gaming also didn't cross over past casual-style/reality based gaming (ie: dancing, baseball, fishing, tennis, etc.) ... people didn't go crazy about motion based Zelda or Metroid or Red Steel 2 or Star Wars (Kinect) once the inital hype wore off. It's just a craze that ran its course, today casuals are more interested in smartphone/iOS gaming if they want to game with simple/easy to play experiences. They dominate Nintendo on price/selection too.

Cartoony games are not vogue right now either outside of the smartphone/tablet market where they dominate. But on consoles/portables they're not doing that great, even Sony is finding it tough to sell things like LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway.

Japanese console industry has imploded. This hurts Nintendo the most.

Portable gaming is declining because kids/parents are getting their fix from cheap iOS/tablet gaming.

Console gaming is become the relam of big budget, big TV experiences for Western consumers primarily ... something that doesn't play well to Nintendo. 

You have big budget console games on one end of the street (Uncharted, COD, Battlefield, Batman, Destiny, etc.) and then you have mobile blockbuster break outs that are cannibalizing the "I just want to play some simply, fun video games" crowd like Candy Crush Saga, Plants Vs. Zombies, Angry Birds, etc. but in the middle has become squeezed out of the equation more and more. Mario can still live there, but not many other IP can anymore. 

Nintendo's had an incredible run (30 years in the console space is amazing), and they still make great games, but I question their ability to compete in this environment. They are stuck in a series of dead ends. Maybe the sea tide shifts a little allowing something like Splatoon to become a big hit. I think Amiibos will be successful for them financially though.

yeah i would. Becasue that has been the general consensus for years. Are we going to move goal posts and change the definitions because we dont want to call a console we may like a flop? Naw i dont think it works that way. Not for a major console. It doesnt matter what anyone would take. Most would take getting peeded on over getting crapped on but it would still be considered bad either way. 

One game isn't going to save a console. Also we don't know the impact of MK8 on the dev/publisher market yet (content announcements etc). It has only been out for 3 weeks,

Vita won't sell that many, perhaps not even half of that.

However X1 will absolutely demolish those kind of numbers. Most of Microsoft's big guns are yet to release on it.

Sony is repeating that success to an extent. The only way PS brand faltered last gen was due to PS3's pricing. Right now Sony has the right price to sell its PS4 at and its selling very well too, even with all of Sony's big guns yet to release on it.

Sony's games are immensely fun and offer variety the way Nintendo games don't. That is one of the reasons they sell.

But the fact remains that Nintendo turned a nice profit on N64 and even GameCube so IMO that isn't a flop.

Also we may indeed have to adjust goalposts, in particular in handheld gaming. With IOS/Android now a major force in portable gaming there is no way 3DS and Vita will move as many units as their predecessors. I remember a few years ago where many were predicting a Microsoft handheld was in the works, in the current portable gaming scene that now seems unimaginable. Even Nintendo who have dominated handheld gaming for decades will be very wary of investing big amounts of cash for R&D and marketing of a new handheld console to succeed 3DS. 

Mark my words - Wii U and XBone will struggle to hit 40 million sales.

n64, maybe GC i doubt it. Again most of there profits from that time came from GBA, i wouldnt be surprised if they just broke even on GC. ive never read anywhere where they actually made money ON GC. or even N64 for that matter.

I dont think we need to adjust goalposts, we'll be adjusting all day. I never expected 3ds or Vita to do as good as their predeccesors, but when 3ds is trailing behind even GBA then thats kind of flopping smartphones or not.

Wii U will struggle to get to 30mil let alone 40. YOu might be low balling Xbone, at least that seems like a console that some people want to get.

X1 will easily sell over 40 million units.

I think a hybrid console will unite the 3 ds and wii u crowd and may even ignite a flame under the casual audience.. This is what I believe nintendo will do
