Forums - Nintendo - People are underestimating the sales potential of Bayonetta 2 (plus predictions)

Being exclusive doesn't mean anything. It didn't help Zack and Wiki or Dead Space: Extraction on the Wii and they were both great games. The only games that sell really good that are exclusive are Nintendo "franchise" games. Bayonetta 2 doesn't attract Nintendo fans and Bayonetta didn't make millions of fans. The best to you. You seem to really want it to reach that million mark. I will never say never for you sake.

I am glad that Nintendo was so bold to pick a mature title but I think it would have been wiser to make a new mature IP instead of publishing a sequel to one that didn't sold well. A sequel that Sega didn't want to have anything to do with because of poor sales.

Being exclusive DOES mean something.  The 3rd party games that were on Wii U were mostly also available on other systems.  That fact DOES change things.  Bayonetta 2 has at least A million "fans" btw.  Also, Zack and Wiki sounds like it was a new IP, and Dead Space: Extraction was a spin-off.  Bayonetta 2 is the actual sequel, is NOT a timed-exclusive, and has been shown off quite a bit so people DO know about it.

Do you really think a million fans would buy a Wii U just for Bayonetta 2? I doubt less than a quarter of them even what or would buy a Wii U for Bayonetta 2. I hardly call it a system seller. How many games that sold poorly as Bayonetta 2 sold consoles? Why do you even care so much? Everything is stacked against Bayonetta 2 but for some reason you care so much to say otherwise. Good luck on those sales.

If this game sells more than 500k I'd be shocked.

If the Bayonetta fanbase is loyal enough (and most likely those that are pissed that it's on Wii U are a vocal minority), they can account for a decent percentage of sales.  I don't think it would be shocking at all to see 500k+ sales.  I would be more surprised if it matches and/or outsells the original PS3+360 combined LTD.

edit: I'll just use this post to say that I think 900k LTD is a reasonable prediction for this game.  Wont make any bets on it, though.

A fair question is "who is the bayonetta fanbase?"

What does our data say about what sales were before the game hit the bargain bin? How quickly did the game get there?

If you're talking to me, at least indicate it (best way is to click the "quote" button").  Also, no one said that a million fans will buy a Wii U just for Bayonetta 2.  We're not talking hardware, we're talking software.  And you really can't know how many of them bought a Wii U for Bayonetta 2 because people have already started buying a Wii U for Bayonetta 2 early on.

I'm not sure if you fully understand the situation if you believe that "everything is stacked against Bayonetta 2."   That would be true if the game suddenly became multiplat and got delayed like Rayman Legends did.  And Bayonetta did not sell poorly.  It sold over 1m, which is profitable for the vast majority of games.

All I know is I decided to buy it after the strong showings at Nintendo Treehouse Livecast demos, and the fact the first game is included, and that it will be 60fps. The original I played on PS3 had lot of performance issues. It will be good to play a super polished version of the game with the sexy Link outfit, and then the sequel.

The Bayonetta fanbase is obviously not going to be the whole 2m that the original sold, but I also doubt that the fanbase (defined as anyone who actually cares about getting a sequel) is less than 500k.  Even if we assume it is, Bayonetta 2 has the exposure and we know there should be newcomers to the series coming in.  That number could be very low, but it doesn't need to be very high for it to get past the 500k threshold.  Also, this game can ALSO benefit from the "bargain bin" if the original benefitted that much.

Of course, I don't think 500k is a dumb prediction since it really depends on how many that liked the original will move to the Wii U and get the game.  I don't have too much faith that solely on newcomers, the game can pass 500k.

Where's the evidence that the Wii U install base is interested in this type of game? PS360 had a >10x install base with inherently more people who're into the genre yet only managed 2 million between them. How does a, let's face it, <10 million install base by the time B2 launches generate more than 1 million sales for a game like this?

you want evidence?

http://www.vgchartz.com/preorders/41798/USA/

31,000 and the game resaled between 4 month, versus 33,000 PS3 and 35,000 X360 the week before coming.

Dying light on Ps4 has 90k pre orders with no release date. The order has over 100k. Pre orders with a 2015 release date. 30k pre orders isn't very good evidence of significant interest. But we'll have to see how that number grows over the next few months.

1 million max and that's only because WiiU gamers don't have much else to choose from. So it's not going to be thanks to the game itself as it's as niche as a game can be.

500k lifetime and I'm being optimistic. W101 barely hit 200k.

W101 will edge over 300k lifetime, so 500k isnt optimistic. That said holy $$$$! Some predictions here are O.o

Who the f*** would say 500k+ FW? Half of MK8?

OT: My guess is 300k FW,   600k (2014)  and  900k-1mil Lifetime.

That Bayo1 is a sweet deal, i mean its a BRAND NEW GAME and a Port in one! $40-$50 deals at stores is a sweet spot
