Without Pokemon, they will have maybe 20 unique characters?  Disney has hundreds of characters from their movies (including Marvel / Pixar / Disney).  Skylanders just invents characters with each new game iteration.

There are already about 10-15 characters shown just at E3. In fact i think its safe to say between 30-40 when it launches.  SSB is using it and it looks like each character is getting one. Wii Fit trainer even. Pokemon is alot of Icing on the cake!

You are right, it is more than 20 if they include everyone from SSB.  That would at least be on par with the first Skylanders game.

She'll be in it for sure, in an interview it was confirmed that all playable characters in SSB will have one due to the feature on wiiu!

I was watching a vid yesterday and it was confirmed all characters playable in SSB will get it

SSB will use the amiibo as a personal character stat booster and customization.

After watching the explanation video, it kinda seems silly to me. The information these little figures are carrying could easily just be tied to your NintendoNetwork/WiiU/Whatevertheycallit account, if Nintendo just bothered to put some extra work into the online service. These physical figures shouldn't be necessary.
