Remember that Europe is much larger than Japan. France, UK, and Germany together would be significantly larger in terms of population than Japan, so even if Mario is less popular, it should sell about as much or more.

Obviously I cannot prove anything but going from the Nintendo forums and my Wii friends list I would say it was probably a bit more than that.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.
if the 1.2m is indeed sold, then you have to remember that ~120k-ish units were sold digitally.

except for the fact that the Japanese WiiU userbase is 38% bigger right now.
If it's going to keep the same attach ratio in Europe as in Japan it's going to do 240k FW.
