Forums - Gaming - Cross-Gen and Last-Gen Games. Why?

In 2014, I guess it's still understandable (though I would have hoped that at least the manufacturers themselves didn't release cross gen titles), in 2015 it's just annoying. Next gen version already sell better than their last gen counterparts anyway and in 2015 it'll be even worse.

If I had to make a guess then I'd say that Mortal Kombat 10 on PS3/360 will do 1/5 of what the game will do on PS4/X1 next year and that 1/5 of sales they could probably easily get from the PS4/X1 if they just made the game next gen only and took full advantage of the new systems.

what cross gen games from the manufacturers are being released in 2015?

Watch dogs pourcentage for ps3+xbox360 is over 20% it's not a small pourcentage many person would buy last gen version because they had old version and Watch dogs it's not enough to make them buy an new gen console

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

It shows how conservative many companies have become in wanting games on as many platforms as possible. I get it, but thing that bothers me is idea that current gen is being held back by this practice.

There are over 100 million PS3/360's out there, and less than 20 mil X1/PS4's. Do the math.

If you're complaining about cross-gen in 2015, wait until EA publishes FIFA 2021 on PS3, PSP and rotary phones...

A lot of games had probably started development well before November 2013 and what devs had in mind were decent PS360 sales still, and flops in the shape of Wii U and Vita. A lot of games are selling way better on next gens, but admittedly are more frontloaded while PS360 versions have better legs which is understandable considering the install base.
I think that every game that started development in 2014 and beyond won't have the burden of last gen consoles, it's pretty obvious that it's barely worth it now, and won't be worth it in 2015 and later.

This does have me a little worried about Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, although I readily admit that my worries may be unfounded. I don't want the game to "flop" in comparison to its predecessors and thus be written off as a franchise, or at least be relegated in terms of priority. When it comes to release, how many people will be owners of new-generation hardware, or at least be well into the process of saving for it and thus less likely to make last-generation purchases?

They have certainly made the wrong bet with the presequel and I'm pretty sure that it will dissapoint commercially. But I think the publisher will know the reason why and they won't write it off as a franchise, I mean BL2 shipped like +8 million copies, right?

But I definitely think it's not a good idea. A bit similar to Batman AO. A prequel that not really everyone wanted, not made by the original developers which might mean lower quality or just trying to do more of the same not to "break" a franchise that isn't yours. It won't sell great and will make the franchise look fatigued. It's a risky move.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

Forza Horizon 2. And if MS was going to pay EA for Titanfall they might as well have paid for full next gen exclusivity. Also, while not simultaneous cross gen releases, things like TLOU Remastered and the rumoured GOW:A for PS4 are also kinda like that. Oh and The Show also, though sports titles are kind of a different story I guess.

horizion is launching this year not next year and we dont know if titanfall2  will be cross gen when its annouced.

I understand cross-gen from third-party publishers. The cost of downporting it for last gen (or even upscaling it for next gen if they're doing that) for the amount of sales they're getting, even if not that spectacular, is worth it for the time being while the transition is happening.

I do not understand cross-gen or last-gen only from first party publishers. They should be trying to push hardware more than anything else. They don't gain much by sticking their game exclusively/also on last gen hardware aside from - yes - increased userbase and sales from that. But it's kind of short term gain rather than long term payoff.

I don't understand last-gen only from third party publishers. If they're a small developer - i.e. most Japanese developers; some European ones, then yes I can understand it. But Borderlands The Pre-Sequel? I do not understand that decision at all.
