Forums - Gaming - Which genre of video games do you want to make a comeback?

Puzzler's ala Myst, Riven, The 7th Hour and the 11th Guest. There are a few out nowadays I believe, but nothing that sucked me in like the above.

Full open 3D platformers, Turnbased JRPG's, and SHMUPS. Full blown console versions too. Not 3DS or Vita.

I can't think of a good answer, since I'm not a fan of most dead genres.

I feel like the hack 'n slash genre is in need of a comeback, since 2010 it's been a tough time for fans of the genre with both quality and quantity going down.

In 2010 we had God of War III, GoW: Ghost of Sparta, Castlevania: LoS, Dante's Inferno, Darksiders, Bayonetta - Amazing year.

In 2011 we had nothing worth noting - Shit year.

In 2012 we had a poorly received NG3 and Darksiders 2. - Bad year.

In 2013 we had GoW: Ascension, DmC and Metal Gear: Revengeance - Decent year.

In 2014 we've just had the disappointing Castlevania: LoS2 so far with Bayonetta 2 coming later this year - Bad year so far.

The genre needs to be reinvigorated, I think we need more new IPs in the genre since NG, DMC and Castlevania are practically dead, Bayonetta 2 is probably going to flop and the future of Darksiders is iffy.

God of War 4 is a given, I'd also like to see Heavenly Sword and Dante's Inferno get sequels but I want some new western AAA IPs in this genre too.

The problem with Hack n Slash (for me) is that God of War is just so much better than the rest lol, just my opinion :P

RTS's

by far for me.

Point and click adventure. Outside of free flash games the genre is pretty dead. Has a lot of potential for story and puzzle solving. The genre used to be huge. Remember Myst? Nowadays I just see a few kickstarters for them here and there.

FIghting games need to be reinvented again. I don't know how, but they should be. 99% of fighting games are Street Fighter inspired. Two characters face each other with their respective health bar on their side of the screen, a timer in the middle, you hit each other with moves of varying degrees of difficulty in button input, and first to KO the other wins the round. Multiple rounds. The other 1% is Smash Bros. 4 players in an arena with varying amounts of platforming involved hit each other with standard or special moves, upping the "damage percentage" that makes hits go far, and the goal is to hit them so hard they fly off the stage. Playstation All Stars played with this a bit, so that the goal wasn't to knock off the opponent or drain their health, but use a finishing move on them. It was done very poorly, but at least it played a bit more with the Smash Bros approach. More fighting games need to play with the Smash Bros. approach, and a whole new approach needs to be developed to make all new kinds of fighting games. The first type seems to stem from beat 'em ups, while the second type seems to draw somewhat from platforming. What if a 3rd type drew from a different genre, like MOBA? I haven't play Project X on 3DS, but apparently that was a mix of fighting and strategy RPG. Experiments with the genre need to happen or it will stagnate.

AAA JRPGs are actually kind of rare nowadays. I miss the golden SNES era...

Flight Simulators?
Real Time Tactics like Myth series? (Pretending that crappy Myth III never existed to taint it).

Stwike him, Centuwion. Stwike him vewy wuffly! (Pontius Pilate, "Life of Brian")
A fart without stink is like a sky without stars.
TGS, Third Grade Shooter: brand new genre invented by Kevin Butler exclusively for Natal WiiToo Kinect. PEW! PEW-PEW-PEW!

Said the same thing on an earlier page, I miss Myst-type games, Riven, The 7th Hour, and the 11th Guest....awesome games, point and click/puzzlers...effin amazing.

I would like to see more games that would have been considered 'AAA' last gen. Surely a game that cost $30 million to make last gen would cost much less now (engines are already mature and development more efficient)?. That level of graphics is good enough for me. Maybe just push for 60fps and otherwise keep the development budget relatively low. Then you can take more risks with gameplay.

If you enjoyed The Neverhood (definitely recommended if you haven't played it), check out the upcoming spiritual successor, Armikrog.
