Well, I believe hack n' slash and JRPGs aren't what the OP means. There are tons of JRPGs and even if we have less HnS games, there are still some good ones.
I vote on beat n' up games.
The 2D beat em up genere is overflowing imo. I can think of 10 XBLA 2d beat em ups off the top of my head most released in the past 3 years.
To be honest I think most generes are doing well enough but a few are way to oversaturated. I wouldnt mind seeing a good tony hawk game released its been ages since skate 3.
Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.
Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Today's market is mainly filled with 3rd person shooters, Horror games, RPG's, 1st person shooters and platformers. While this is fine I would love it if the genre of 2D beat 'em ups made an spectacular comeback. Why? Because not only does it bring back nostalgia these types of games created some amazing retro gems (Battletoads, Streets of rage, Altered beast, and all those Movie/T.V inspired games). It's safe to say Hack and slashes have taken the place from the 2D beat 'em ups and now they are a rare sight when they used the be the kings of the arcades. The closest big Franchise that reminds me of the genre is the kirby series and even though they are still platformers at heart they bring the awesomeness of the genre when launcing an enemy up into the air, bodyslaming them, or just burning them alive. Viewtiful joe is another great example of how the 2D beat 'em ups can still make an incredible game. Honestly I would even be fine with more 2D hack and slashes like Golden Axe. Alas the industry seems to be more focused on first person shooters and platformers for the genre to resurge but still a man can dream. What do you think about all this? Do you agree? Am I just living in the past? |
If you play PC games, 2D style beat em ups are one of the more common types of indie games. Here's one that's already developed so you could purchase it elsewhere, but is currently on Steam Greenlight.

Actually, almost everything is common when it comes to indie games.
3D platformers don't get enough love nowadays! I really miss my 3D homies ( Banjo, Crash, Conker, etc...)!

JRPG's lots of them! so I don't have to fill in the blanks with mostly soulless western games.

I'll second this! Hell I'll take any 3d platformer! 5th and 6th gen were ripe with awesome 3d platformers and fun mascots. Now we get Mario, Ratchet (sort of though not a real one since ACiT in 09), finally got a Sly which was buried with no adverts, and uhhhhhh....
WW2 shooters. There haven't been a serious AAA effort in years. Red Orchestra has a good MP but the single player is broken due to AI. We're getting Enemy Front soon, but I'm expecting sub par quality.
So it is happening...PS4 preorder.
Greatness Awaits!

I remember the times when 2D platformers were frowned upon and look at them now! How times change!
