You don't know what the Wii U have/don't have so I'm going to tell you. The Wii U has 32mb eDRAM. Notice that he said only need a little. Notice also he said for nice graphics. I know it's hard to believe but you heard it from the horse's mouth.

That video still doesn't say anything about the WII U's eDRAM ...
Seeing is believing now replaced with owning is believing.
Mummelmann is right, let's get back on topic. The Wii U is already determined with high probability to be in 3rd place, likely by a big margin.

You are right. I'm take heed if it allows me.

No, he doesn't say that you only need a little eDRAM. He says that the on-chip-memory needs to be very small... because even 32 MB eDRAM take much space on the die. And that's the catch: only 32 MB of the memory can profit of the fast RAM at once... every arithmetic operation that doesn't fit in that tiny memory can't profit from that speed advantage.
You have a fast speedboat and a slow container ship. Every cargo that doesn't fit on the speedboat has to be transported with the slow freighter. And if you have 100 smaller units (which would fit on the speedboat each), you have to decide, which of them are most urgent... the rest is delivered by the slow cargoship.

Indeed, you didn't convince me. Wii Party U and Nintendo Land minigames may be fun, but they are just that: minigames. They aren't enough to sell people on an expensive piece of hardware which is evident by Wii U sales numbers. The game show idea is also something that is only suited for a console with a low entry price. And none of the aforementioned things spark the imaginations of people for what could be done with this hardware. Regarding longtime gamers, your example is working inwards rather than outwards. The system is not going to sell better by targeting a niche within a niche, hence why I said that you shouldn't bring up something like my example from the previous post. Platformers have been the thing that kept the Wii U afloat. Meanwhile, the variety that made use of the Gamepad (games like Pikmin 3, The Wind Waker HD and The Wonderful 101) didn't do much good. I'll give you that Nintendo could have tried to do more with the Gamepad, but I really don't think that it would have made a crucial difference in the long run. The Gamepad is a controller that can do a lot of different things, but at the same time it's also one that looks intimidating because it's so overloaded with functionality. |
ok, so are you telling me that once nintendo revealed the gamepad in e32011, you absolutely knew this wasnt going to end well, or be damn near impossibly difficult from the start? or did it take some time of thinking about it to know that this new controller idea was going to be a colossal failure? we know how hard this industry is to predict, so i find it hard to believe that e32011 was the start of knowing that 3rd place was inevitable.
ok, but i do want to respond to these points as briefly as possible. i brought up the minigames ideas because they are EXAMPLES of ways to use the gamepad in the context of a larger game. why cant nintendo see that these ideas are good, and try to use them to spice up certain aspects of games, or make an ambitious new ip centered around it?
examples dealing with more long time gamers that i brought up arent meant to target a specific niche, i think of it as making the console more inclusive and offering more variety. i just feel like dungeon master type ideas could be effectively utilized if it were just thought about, and they put some dollars toward it. they have to have faith in their vision.
my question to you then is this, what should have nintendo been planning for this 8th generation? take the gamepad out, and put 8GB of ram in? a console that makes it easy for developers to port games from ps4 to wii u? the sales would probably be better than they are now, but there has to be something that nintendo could have done to run away with this one, and i think something like the gamepad would have been necessary for that.

Yes, that's what I am saying. I knew it as soon as E3 2011. The only thing that could lift Nintendo out of third place was if either Sony or Microsoft screwed up even more. If all the context of video game history was applied to the Wii U, the only logical conclusion was failure. What Nintendo should have done instead is continue the Wii path. Fix the things that needed fixing. Better motion sensing (the Wii's Nunchuk is awful), better online infrastructure, better pacing for software releases. They would have been left out of the multiplatform mix again, but that is hardly relevant anyway. There is not a single Nintendo system in history that owed its success to multiplatform games. |
well, im not going to completely concede my points, but i will admit that maybe youre on to something with that. i had little problems with the wii. probably was my third favorite nintendo console.
I wonder would a Wii 2 really have done better? I mean, it would have done better, but i kinda doubt it would have been doing Wii numbers.
PS4 is selling on average around 1,267,000 per month after 6 months for a total of 7.6 million.
XBox One selling on average around 767,000 per month after 6 month for a total of 4.6 million.
Wii U selling on average 344,000 per month 18 months for a total of 6.2 million. 6 months since its November 2013 launch the PS4 has sold a staggering 500,000 per month more than the XBox One. The PS4 has sold over 923,000 per month than the Wii U.
