Not really, how can a character be complex and simple ? that doesn't make any sense to me. I can understand some situations require simple or complex reaction, this is normal. But I was saying that the "result" of all that, reactions, traits, motivation..etc which determine the character behavior can't be simple. Hell, we can't even fully understand ourselves, how is that simple ?

I have no Idea who Geralt of Rivia is, so I can't comment on that.

There's complexity in being simple; it is no exclusive trait.

And Geralt of Rivia is the main character of both The Witcher games and novels.

A simple guy with a troubled past. He doesn't care about you, nor about himself really (other than staying alive). He hasn't got barely any friends, nor he wants to. He simply exists in times which he doesn't really belong to (think of it as a samurai on XIX Century). He can acomplish a mission which means assassinating someone, only to later kill his contractor because he's about to kill a defendless woman. There's no evolving personality, nor he does really need one.

He's both simple and complex, and you can't really define him by his actions because he's a walking contradiction. But that doesn't make him less of a character, does it?

Actually, that is a very intresting character. I wouldn't call him simple though. His action and principles seem to be simple. but saving a defendless woman reveals the complexity of his character. I would never expect him to do that, that is evolving personality imo.

We are in agreement btw. My point is, a character is always complex, but that doesn't mean all of that character trait ,principles , motivation can't be simple and straightforward. There is complexity in being simple indeed.

I really need to play  The Witcher series xD

So, what if you create this character in Dragon's Dogma, then choose to stab yourself and gave your pawn a human life, thus breaking the ever-turning wheel? Wouldn't you say that, even if short-lived and simple, even hollow at times, the character is complex? He's able to take such a choice, even if he's merely controled by the real player?

@Bolded, yes, yes you do. Those are games on which choices truly matter, and the funniest thing of all, is that sometimes you make choices without you even realizing it.

I'm too hyped for this game. You know this game is going to be amazing when most of the dev team consists of the people who made VI, VII, X, KH, CC and Type-0.

Where is Type-0, though :(

In Japan. The official fan translation patch will be done in August so if I were you I'd import (or pirate) Type-0 and get the patch when it drops!

I liked Dragon'a Dogma "true" ending a lot, but that is all what it was, a well written ending, the character has nothing to do with it ( is wasn't even a choice if I remember correctly, only if you lose the battle but that is not really a choice)  There was no development that lead your character to that conclusion, no principle that determined his behavior, he has no role in it whatsoever. That is what I mean by no character development. If you replace your character with any other NPC, the ending would be the same because he has no role in it nor there was a reasonable justification for his "choice".

Dragon's Dogma has a good world story but no character development at all imo.
