And Geralt of Rivia is the main character of both The Witcher games and novels.
A simple guy with a troubled past. He doesn't care about you, nor about himself really (other than staying alive). He hasn't got barely any friends, nor he wants to. He simply exists in times which he doesn't really belong to (think of it as a samurai on XIX Century). He can acomplish a mission which means assassinating someone, only to later kill his contractor because he's about to kill a defendless woman. There's no evolving personality, nor he does really need one. He's both simple and complex, and you can't really define him by his actions because he's a walking contradiction. But that doesn't make him less of a character, does it? |
Actually, that is a very intresting character. I wouldn't call him simple though. His action and principles seem to be simple. but saving a defendless woman reveals the complexity of his character. I would never expect him to do that, that is evolving personality imo.
We are in agreement btw. My point is, a character is always complex, but that doesn't mean all of that character trait ,principles , motivation can't be simple and straightforward. There is complexity in being simple indeed.
I really need to play The Witcher series xD
