Mario Kart 8 looks amazing, we can all agree on that.

Most likely not as games always continue to improve in graphics over the consoles lifetime. I remember the developer of the terribly Farcry port for the Wii claiming they made of the most of the Wii or something like that, but they obviously did not.

Define "powerful" please ... If it's any platform with similar specs or more capable to the WII U then I guess an unthrottled tegra K1 would fit the bill but no one in their right minds would even consider an ultra mobile platform to be "powerful" for a start. If it's whatever retro studio says then they probably don't hold high technical standards in regards to feats of the platforms. |
They used to; their Metroid Prime games were of a very high technical standard for their platforms. (GC/Wii)
It's only their latest, Tropical Freeze, that's a graphical letdown for its platform. (Still a fantastic game though)

They could have had high technical standards in the past and their past games did push alot of technical feats but how often do they make demands in the next generation hardware ?
Every developer on that worked with the PS360 demanded that next generation consoles have 8GB of ram. A ready at dawn developer demands that both phong and blinn-phong shading begone with next generation consoles and wants to look forward to using cook torrance lighting model. Some developers want to get rid of specular aliasing with next generation hardware. John carmack was lobbying AMD to have their newest GPUs support hardware mega texturing for next generation consoles. Some developers want better performance and support of GPU compute such as tressfx in the new tomb raider reboot. These next generation consoles even have demands from the manufacturer themselves such as AMD aggressively touting another rendering technique such as a light indexed deferred renderer for obvious reasons such as getting a leverage on Nvidia. etc ...
In short the developers from the PS360 are giving some pretty excessive requirements. Would retro have asked many of these things ?

Direct feed images show how awful the graphics, 360/PS3 racers look much better

Retro aren't really in a position to make technical demands of Nintendo.

Then just what technical requirements did Nintendo have for their next generation console ? Their fetish for making energy efficient consoles get in the way of making mild contenders that consume over 100 watts. A 30 watt device doesn't seem really impressive to those developers and this makes things even worse as the WII U is using the older 40nm process node.

Basically, one that offered the same kind of leap over the Wii as the PS3 did over the PS2. (As long as it fit in a small case, used little power, was quiet, generated little heat, was backwards compatible, and wasn't going to RROD)

So Nintendo wanted their next generation console to match the Tegra K1 ? Am I getting this right ?
