FFXIII doing multiplatform was easily the biggest meltdown! The NeoGAF thread was also so damn lulzy! http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=327004

Gotta be XB1 reveal. No one actually thought MS was going through with it and those who did frequently said Sony was just being mum on it because they were going to do the same thing. After that Sony E3 conference the meltdowns were incredible. I'm watching E3 with my friend literally with our jaws dropping and laughing at every policy reveal and then the price was just the knockout. No one could believe how definitive and direct they were with their message and some hardcore Xbots were converted. Then that Amazon poll with Xbox losing 22 to 1 in ratio before being taken down. Then Don with his INFAMOUS "just buy 360" policy for servicemen. The single biggest swing in marketshare in E3 history. We're still seeing the effects of that meltdown today with Sony leading.

I haven't watched the whole reveal because I had no interest in the console... but here in the community the comotion was certainly huge... and we still have people that believe Sony wanted to do the same and waited for MS to show first and be burned and them made the 1st day patch to remove it (no one have found this code on the patch yet).

even me, who doesn't really like Xbox, was saying that they wouldn't do it.  I just couldn't believe they would try something so stupid.  When they revealed the console and then started with the whole reveal of policies confiming everything I just laughed and then shook my head.  Like really?  Then I was worried Sony would do the same thing and was soooo happy during that conference.

It was uncanny, I can barely believe they done it. From the previous rumours and the backlash that followed they could see that by E3 it would only get worst. And some of the fanboys first said the rumour were false, then that MS wouldn't screw them, then that Sony would follow, then that it doesn't matter because they are always on and love digital only, them that sony invented the idea but waited MS reveal before comiting to it, then that the idea was great but sony fanboys didn't gave MS to show their vision and now some complain about how great it would be but sony fanboys made MS forfeit it.

The biggest meltdown ever actually was a benefit to the industry. Atari going ballistic on Nintendo for allowing Coleco to have Donkey Kong on the Adam Computer at the Summer CES in 1983. Atari thought they got full rights to the computer versions of the game only to find out they didn't get the tape rights. There was serious talk of Atari publishing the NES in the U.S. but after this, Atari delayed this. The next month, Ray Kassar was fired and Nintendo decided to eventually market the console themselves.

I'm not going to bother with Internet period stuff. All of it pales in comparison and most of it is overblown hooey.

Reminds me of the birth of PlayStation in a way with Sony and Nintendo issues.

So? The game was coming either way for the PS3! It's not like the cancelled it... they just expanded the Final Fantasy brand to the Xbox audience. I see nothing wrong with that.

Square did worse with Nintendo. They released the first 6 games in Nintendo consoles and then switched to Playstation. With FF XIII Square went from Sony to Sony and Microsoft. With FF VII they went from Nintendo to Sony.

It would have been a huge megaton if the internet was more massive at the time it happened.

No they didn't cancel it though I'm sure there were alot of people that bought a PS3 assuming FF was only going to be on Playstation since they mentioned it was exclusive firstly (Heck I bought a PS3 for FF Versus XIII and that's worst cause I didnt come out that gen lol).  Very true that Square did worst to Nintendo with the FF series and if internet was massive back then it would've definitely exploded,  but switching from Nintendo to PS did wonders for Square.  I don't think turning FF into multiplat helped.

Personally I wonder how sales would've turned out if FFXIII didn't go multiplat.  Because of it, the game got delayed that could have caused fans to care less and decide not to pick the game up day1 (as well at the time PS3 didnt have that great of a library so many were eager to get their hands on a blockbuster title).  Then with the wait and finally released, the fans read the mixed reviews of the games so some may have still picked up a copy while others just didn't care anymore.  As well, PS3's library were much better so there were more options of games to buy over it.

But oh wells, these days nobody should expect third party to make exclusive games anymore.

When this topic comes up a lot of people always focus on Squaresoft and FF7, though they shouldn't.   Nintendo must have seen what was coming long before Squaresoft moved out of their US headquarters  in Redmond Washington (which was literally located right next to Nintendo's own US HQ).  They had very close communications with each other back then and they both knew that their exclusive relationship was coming to an end with Squarsoft's new ambitions and the N64 cartridge limitations.

On the other hand Nintendo failed to get a game series on the N64 which was completely possible on cartridges and that was already multi-platform. That game was Street Fighter.  Sales of SFII were huge back then, even in Japan where Street Fighter II:The World Warrior outsold Final Fantasy VI.

Street Fighter II: TWW SNES sales in Japan = 2.87 million

Final Fantasy VI SNES sales in Japan = 2.55 million

Street Fighter II was one of the best selling 3rd party games on the SNES, if not the best.   Failing to put a single Street Fighter game on the N64 was one of the biggest tragedies for both Nintendo and Capcom.

The 1983 market crash is surely the big one

But others are loss of 3rd party support from Nintendo to Sony

SNES CD turning into PS1

Failure of Dreamcast meaning Sega left the hardware business

Xbox 360's RROD

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

I do agree that we hadn't a SF for a long time on console, wouldn't blame Nintendo exclusively... But Capcom and SF seems like a lack of middle ground... or they skip gen without a input (like I don't even remember a proper SF on the PlayStation 1, Saturn or N64) or have 5 yearly "DLCs" called as full games like in SFIV and SFII, maybe I and III were more on the middle ground but just because they weren't as massive in selling as II and IV.
