i don't think all these other extras hurt things,. i'd never argue that. in fact, i think it's these extras that have made the gen 8 transition so fast. i mean, we're around 6 months in now and have ~11.5M units sold between ps4 and xbone. that's amazing. for a gamer like me,. that $400 price tag isn't so bad when i know i get quality gaming and all that other shit that i do enjoy. i purchased my ps4 much, much earlier into this gen than i normally would. ...but i still don't seeing it doing anything to expand the audience for consoles. my non-gaming fans are buying rokus and apple tvs and chromecasts and probaly fireTVs. i think it is an inherently flawed PoV that thinks anyone would pay a $300 to $450 dollar premium for a device in order to have a feature (gaming) they aren't interested in. consoles are for gamers first and foremost and pretty much exclusively. |
Partly agree. Sony and MS are looking at both the same way. Gamers are heavy tv watchers also. Why not do both with us?

I guess not, sorry. It doesn't. Why not? Because I'm only saying that for now the PS4 is the better choice. If the XOne ended up doing this TV combo thing well I will have a definite opinion on which console is better. But do you see the situation right here? XOne didn't really show this all-in-on entertainment device properly yet, and that's why people are choosing for PS4. It's 100 dollars cheaper, they aren't patient enough that Xbox will improve and they still want to play the next-gen games. And that right there is why I think Microsoft's tactic is flawed.

highly limited returns. you aren't going to sway a gamer from one system to another with tv,.. you'll do that with games. you aren't going to sway a tv consumer to buy a console with ~10 shows a year. that's a massive ripoff compared to putting money into a competent tv service like netflix or hulu.

Agreed about the games totally.
Just so I'm clear, it's good that sony adds value to ps+ but it's bad that MSFT adds value to an XBL subscription.z Forward Unto Dawn has over 10 million views on youtube and it's also on Netlix. They clearly have some games that would be great shows/movies I am excited for the added content, I do more than game.

Weren't ps owners praising and bragging that ps3 had bluray and could do more multimedia than xbox 360? Now Ms is trying to up their multimedia features, now it's a problem to ps owners? See the hypocrisy ? |
It's not a problem to me. Like I've repeatedly said, it's good that MS is doing it, and if Sony was doing all the TV stuff as well, I'd say that it added to the value. And if PS fans are thinking this is a problem, then they need to stop (I don't notice it often). Things like this add value and consumers will see that and it will make the console do better. Higher price obviously didn't stop the PS3 from selling well. But two wrongs don't make a right. Just because PS fans did it shouldn't mean Xbox fans should turn around and do it.

The key is that MS is not targeting gamers, they are targeting the family. As your household get bigger, you needs change. My needs today is much different then when I was single. Its a easier sell to the wife when you can show a device that gives everyone what they want. Trying to convice your wife that you need to drop 400 to 500 bones on something that take you away from the family never is a good conversation.

The XO is gonna get halo 5 it is a gaming console .... period

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

Yes the problem is this is clearly a failing attitude. How many gamers do you honestly believe are going to find themselves in this situation? Not only that what wife is going to agree with the xbox just because it can do what the cable box under her TV is already doing? Now one way I could see it being argued is if you're paying for another reciever and you removed the other reciever and just use your xbox one. Now you're saving money as well.
I'll be honest though I think investing in cable TV was a mistake. Cable TV is on it's way out, I think espicially with people who are involved with gaming. I still subscribe to cable TV but I haven't actually used it for a long time. The boxes are completely disconnected in my closet I watch everything off my HTPC. The guy who lives above me wants to get a PS4 but he's waiting for the media streaming features to return he doesn't have cable either.
Oh well MS is learning the hard way and hopefully they release a crazy powerful console next gen I have no issue jumping between MS and Sony. If MS does the same thing as last gen though when it comes to games (no new IP's/exlusives half way through) then I'll be hesitant to do that unless their machine is much more powerful. They did it with the 360 and I hated watching PS3 owners get The last of us and Beyond 2 souls with PS4 right around the corner. Alan Wake was the last new IP I got and I loved it.
