Forums - Gaming - I don't get Microsoft's new Xbox tactic

funny thread.

The console that really is a gaming console this gen with only / mostly games in mind is the Wii U and look how it is doing.

All these Apps and entertainment shows do not hurt their gaming performance. All it does is to offer more.
Do you think Halo 5 will be worse, because the WWE app just launched? Of course not.

MS made it really clear how big their investments in the gaming related things are, while other lose their staff or have to fire them. Look what MS was doing recently. They bought the Gears of War franchise and signed a multi year and multi game contract with Undead Labs a couple of weeks ago and they are still building new studios.

On the other hand they are getting their foot in the door with their TV Series and shows. And as long their gaming offerings remain as good as they currently are, everybody wins.

Actually I think this is a slap in Sonys face more than anything. Sony has a pretty big movie studio, but failed to use it for other ways of entertainment. It is funny that MS managed to build a movie studio, get the right people behind it and produce a TV series before Sony did this.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

A lot of people will only have one TV and so will want something under it that can cover as many bases as possible, and maybe for some people that is Xbox.  You're not in that situation.  p.e.o.p.l.e.a.r.e.d.i.f.f.e.r.e.n.t.

while i get that p.e.o.p.l.e.a.r.e.d.i.f.f.e.r.e.n.t,... the average US household has 3.1 TVs.    ...and i'd be willing to bet the housholds able to purchase a $500 gaming machine are far more likely to have more than 1 tv than the households unable to afford xbone.

Participants in the average marriage don't typically sit in different rooms doing totally different things all night long like you claim you and your wife do.

i never said all night long.   but when american idol, the voice, x-factor or any of that other shit my wife wants to watch goes on i leave posthaste.  she hates gaming as much as i hate shitty tv so it works.

honestly, based on your reply you are either single or lying to yourself.

What an amazing relationship! ;)

lulz.

but seriously, in which relationship do they do everything together?  i've never met one.

The relationships in a fake and shitty MTV 'reality' show.

Quite an interesting comment you make here. I must partly agree with this but before that we haven't actually seen the series yet, and they might be pretty bad. I don't really think so, but you never know. Then we must also take into account that the investment might not pay off in the end, but we shall see.

If the vision for XBone was to be just a games' machine and not a "TV box", you'd all say "I just wanted games anyway". & You realize they're following the model set by Sony, right? << that's according to you.

Anyways, the bottom line is, there is nothing wrong with MS trying to take over the living room with its all in ONE console.  I have not flipflop my opinion. Most people bought the ps3 back them for the bluray..I thought the console  was very expensive at launch just like I think xbox one is expensive now. I am just not sure where this thread is going ..as far as I know both sony and microsoft is trying to take over your living room...MS is just trying to do it better than sony.

According to me? How so? All last gen, the "extra" features that added value to the PS3, Xbox fans apparently didn't want. They only cared about games. I didn't matter if "in reality, the PS3 is cheaper than the 360. To be equivalent, the 360 would cost $750" because you could get a 360 for $400 and be happy with it. Don't act like just a couple months ago at launch, these boards weren't lit up with people saying "when you factor in Kinect and the HDMI pass through, the XBone is actually cheaper than PS4". It may not be you specifically (and in all honesty, my post wasn't an attack or even really targeted at you), but Xbox fans here (and in other places) certainly have done this. And I would classify that as flip flopping, since you guys used to only care about games and extra features didn't matter.

And what other console, before the PS3, was as much a gaming device as a non-gaming device? Internet browsing, media server, its own music service, original content like Qore, etc. Do you think MS would have done this with the XBone had it not been successful with the PS3? Because it looks like it's precisely what they're doing: making a big deal out of all the extra, non-gaming features in order to justify the higher cost. "You'll get to do more than just play games with XBone". That's pretty much what the PS3 model was.

And like I said, I don't think it's a bad thing that MS is taking this approach. What I'm calling out is how Xbox fans are cool with it. MS is taking the same "Sony approach" to the XBone that Xbox fans used to denounce the PS3 not too long ago, but now that it's on their console, it's the best thing since the wheel.

Come on with this generalizing rewritten mess. You keep saying this shit like every xbox fan agreed. The 360 had Netflix 1st and was talked about the same way. Did the media extender also. They both were/are media devices.

Xbox is just the first step for Microsoft to try and get in our living rooms. Also with going with a game console you have a fan base from the get go and they do not have to start from scratch, if they fail they can just focus on games.

I understand that they have this base to start from, but most gamers don't care about this stuff and the PS4 is just mainly a better choice.

lAUGHoUTlOUD

Maybe I should've made a better reply there. What I really mean is that they don't care about it for the extra 100 dollar price tag. They also know that the PS4 will get more multimedia fuctions, thus for now the PS4 is clearly the better choice. And looking at sales people seem to agree.

Sales more means its better to you? Lol ok

i don't think all these other extras hurt things,. i'd never argue that.  in fact, i think it's these extras that have made the gen 8 transition so fast.  i mean, we're around 6 months in now and have ~11.5M units sold between ps4 and xbone.  that's amazing.  for a gamer like me,. that $400 price tag isn't so bad when i know i get quality gaming and all that other shit that i do enjoy.  i purchased my ps4 much, much earlier into this gen than i normally would.

...but i still don't seeing it doing anything to expand the audience for consoles.  my non-gaming fans are buying rokus and apple tvs and chromecasts and probaly fireTVs.  i think it is an inherently flawed PoV that thinks anyone would pay a $300 to $450 dollar premium for a device in order to have a feature (gaming) they aren't interested in.   consoles are for gamers first and foremost and pretty much exclusively.

remember this?  while it was a parody video it actually spoke a lot of truth about the reveal. Microsoft had way to much focus on tv and it became a bad thing. a Console should be a gaming console first, and a media center second, of course thats my opinion, but judging how things worked out, a lot of people seemed to agree with me.

LMAO tv tv vt tle tv

MS mesage is convoluted. Sony was far smarter branded the PS4 a game console first and formost and all the other crap is scecondary.

Honestly, the media and tv stuff was something that was expected. i expect netflix on my console and other apps, its just something that any device can do. going full force with "TV TV TV" isnt attractive. you know what else can play TV perfectly? a cable box. you know what a cable box cant do? play Destiny and Watch Dogs, so focus on that.
