WTF?

It is Multiplatform.

Yes, to the informed gamer. Even if people know its multiplat, they are convinced that one console is THE place to play it. Hence "pretend".

Wouldn't this then make Titanfall the first "pretend exclusive"?

They show off the XBox One version, show nothing of the XBox 360 version. They release the XBox One version and hold back the XBox 360 version. When the 360 version finally gets released it is more like a quiet launch. All the marketting went to the XBox One version of the game. Not the PC version, not the XBox 360 version.

To the uninformed gamer, wouldn't they believe XBox One was THE place to play Titanfall, even though that wasn't really the case?

best place to experience the game.

Since the PS4 version of Destiny is going to be in 1080p and  it's likely that the Xbox One version won't, technically it is the best place to play.

Everyone who is already hyped for it knows on which platforms it will be on. Everyone who doesn't know about it yet will get hyped and start checking for which platform it will be on.
It's a nice term but I doubt that it has any impact on sales.

"First real pretend".

Fucking hell this forum needs a quality control filter for thread creation.

I wouldn't mind if it were like Reddit, with an up and down vote system (as long as people adhere to the intended rules of upvoting/downvoting). Then something like this would get buried. Self-modding, essentially. Crappy threads would never make it to the "front page" of VGC. Troll comments would get downvoted to oblivion and eventually blanked out due to downvotes. Dupe threads would get lessened because the topic being upvoted will be seen clearly, instead of having to search for it. And the best threads and comments would get upvoted.

That would only work if they got rid of post count and this crappy points system.  Too many users on this site who make useless threads for points/postcount and they all post in eachothers threads postcount/point farming.

Great suggestion.

By dumping the post and points systems they would almost instantly eradicate spammers and also potentially cut down the amount of bad thread ideas tossed around here.

This should seriously be considered.

Good thread!
Other examples that come to mind are:
- Assassin's Creed last gen (how PS had the advertising and exclusive content). The sales were pretty even though (shifting slowly from M$ to Sony).
- Final Fantasy 13 (was a large M$ push). Didn't help sales too much.
- BF was targeting playstation a little more later in the gen.
- Sports Titles (Madden, Fifa)

But yes the biggest and most relevant are definitely COD, Destiny, Watch_Dogs

Imagine MS advertising a game from the makers of Halo? It would naturally seem like an extension to their first party. I think from the onset Sony saw an opportunity to pull the game away from them and to try and establish a connection to their brand with the title. Bungie/Activizion might have even preferred this move, as they know Bungie/Halo fans exist on Xbox platforms already, but this would allow for a very high level of advertising to new gamers on a platform they weren't reaching before.

Either way, given that the game was initially not meant to be releasing on Sony platforms, until the sequel, this turned out to be a very surprising move.

Destiny is gonna help move a lot of PS4s with this deal, did people already forget what GTAV did for the PS3?

Because GTAV is GTAV. The most hyped game of 2013. Also one of the most popular franchises of all time. Destiny is not.

Destiny isn't the most hyped game of 2014?

We see a lot of terms thrown around: Exclusive, timed exclusive, console exclusive. Now here me out on the term "Pretend Exclusive".

Pretend Exclusive: A 3rd party multiplat, that releases for multiple consoles in the same window, in which all press showings and marketing are catered to only one console. Exclusive console bundles, being the lead platform, as well as timed exclusive/exclusive  betas and game content also strengthen the claim. The final effect is that the uninformed gamer will be convinced that the version primarily advertised is the only and/or best place to experience the game.

The creator of the term was Microsoft. Two big properties come to mind: GTA 4 and COD. If you remember GTA4, most of the time it was shown it was on a Xbox 360 and all marketing for the games release had only the 360 logo at the end. The games expansions were also a timed exclusive. As for COD, its E3 showings were usually at MS's presentation and its DLC is timed as well, as most commercials having only the 360 logo at the end (some years yes, some no). You can also say Titanfall is a pretend exclusive, but the game isn't available on Playstation (at least until Titanfall 2). That said, the effects and outcome remain the same as X1 is enjoying weekly boosts and software/gold account spikes.

The problem with those two is that they are both mega popular IPs and despite MS's best efforts, the general public knew the games were available elsewhere.

But Destiny, is a new IP, relatively unknown to gamers who don't frequent online gaming news sites/forums. To them, Playstation seems like the only place and/or best place to experience the game. All Destiny content shown so far has had Sony firmly at its side. Beta timed exclusive, exclusive content, and you can bet all marketing upon release will favour the PS logo. IMO, as a gamer who frequents gaming sites, I allready have the persepective that all other versions of Destiny are merely in the shadow of the PS4 version.

Do you think going the pretend exclusive route is worth the investment for high profile 3rd party releases? To me, both MS's past efforts and Sonys current one with Destiny have proved to lead to sales spikes in the games themselves. I think its worth the investment, and certainly a playfully dirty trick that will only be appreciated by the winning party.

EDIT: Watch Dogs would also count as a pretend exclusive for Sony, having invested similar time to secure content as well as showing primarily PS4 builds. IMO it just seems like Destiny has more of Sonys attention, thus the thread.

Did you miss GTA5? Wasn't all marketing showing PS3 version, even the first gameplay vid? Also isnt Watch Dogs the same? Since 2013 all footage we've seen is PS4, with only 1 Nvidia trailer showing its exclusive tech features.
