babies suck. Be better if the character / cart settings made the actual differences you're "gaining" with the small baby characters. Then add other characters from Nintendo IPs.

Agreed.  I've always liked them and they've never been in MK before, making their inclusion welcome to me.

I do really want Diddy Kong in the game though, but seeing as how they're sticking to only the Mario universe it's likely wishful thinking on my part.

Diddy Kong has been in every home console MK since Double Dash, so I'd say he's more of an expectation than a hope. Nintendo has also used other non Mario-verse characters like R.O.B., Funky Kong, and Mii especially.

Diddy Kong and many other Double Dash newcomers also weren't in MKDS, but still made it to MKWii, and we're already seeing that again with MK8, though all of them may not make it this time, but we only now know that. Prior to this screenshot, I'd always expected Diddy Kong to be in here, especially with Tropical Freeze boosting his popularity.

Yeah, but thankfully that's not the case with Mario Kart 8. They gave it a spring release window, and now they're gonna launch it at the latest possible time within that window! I'd think this would mean the game will be fully featured and will include all the necessary characters, though I guess who is necessary is a matter of opinion. I'd like to think Bowser Jr. should be here, but with seven of Bowser's other kids here, it can be argued that Jr. is unnecessary/redundant.

You could be right, and I hope you are because I really want Diddy in the game.

Given my track record with this type of stuff, I'm probably gonna be wrong! xD

I actually don't think Diddy Kong or Birdo are going to be returning anymore. Afterall they're always positioned next to Donkey Kong and Yoshi respectively, but that's impossible with how the roster is lined up in the picture. Heck with this logic, Bowser Jr. and Dry Bowser wont be returning either, meaning the rest of those unknown slots are probably newcomers.
