Diddy Kong has been in every home console MK since Double Dash, so I'd say he's more of an expectation than a hope. Nintendo has also used other non Mario-verse characters like R.O.B., Funky Kong, and Mii especially.

They have in the past, yes, but since MK7 they seem to be limiting the roster to characters only from the Mario universe, save for the inclusion of Miis.
