Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One will Double Performance with DirectX12

Actually it's just another delusional x1 fanboy calling himself developper, who writes articles on Neowin "Where unprofessional journalism look better".

It takes a lot of mind stretching to look at a cpu thread profiling on a PC and conclude from this, that you ll get x2 performance from your gpu in the console. It has been embarrasing for about a year, but now, i don't know... it's just wrong.

Google can be your friend.  His company has been around for over 20 years.. Has released dozens of apps and games. initially developing for OS/2.. before switching to Windows. They even had a digtial distribution company simiar to STEAM called IMPULSE that sold to GameStop in 2011...

Point being..   this is not a X1 "fanboy"..  and he SHOULD know what he is talking about..  Not saying I believe it though.

I know all of this, actually i wish he is just an X1 fanboy because honestly it's ridiculous to make that kind of conclusion from the slide he is presenting, if you know something about console developpement, there s no way you serious saying that. It's like saying that your car will be twice as fast because you put bigger wheels on it.

The funny thing is, the current X1 devkit already has some farily low access hardware, and it's quite normal for a console. Of course the whole environement will improve overtime, but like for any other consoles.. If you want to make the X1 even slower than now? Just make your game with the upcoming default PC version of DX12, and yes it's gonna be even slower. Using that kind of abstractionist API is exactly what you don't want to do in a console. You have to do the exact opposite. Tailor your tools for one specific hardware, write ASM routines, and so on, not using an API specifically designed to support a multitude of different hardware even though it tries to access harware at a lower level, it's never gonna be as low as a console one.

Saw that post on neowin when it first came up and wondered if it'd find it's way here ...

It's funny (and kinda sad) to see so many less-informed ones completely dismiss his claims. I know that some of you desperately don't want this to happen for reasons that are completely immature and ridiculous, but only time will tell HOW much of a difference DX12 makes on PC/tablet, WP and XBO games. Looking at the difference between most early 360 and PS3 games to how they are now I can easily see a massive improvement that could possibly be called a 100% improvement. Seeing that what's being purported here is something beyond that typical 'getting to know the console' process that every console has, the improvements could be more significant.

Is it really too much to ask for some optimism about the future of gaming from those that claim to be its biggest fans?

Pretty much agree with this.  I dont really understand why anybody could get upset by a console being optimized to perform better.  DX12 sounds great and i think we can all expect improvements(which btw is also going to improve PC and tablets).  Regardless on what kind of improvements, it is going to happen, but for some reason some people are getting upset about this.  And like you said, for immature and petty reasons.

certainly not. but lets not mistake optimism for blind foolishness. DX12 doubling XB1 performance? come on, give me a break and dont take people for fools. we might be less informed than others, but we arent completely uninformed.

Software will "double the performance" of fixed hardware!?

Means the software was shiiiiiiit before this. No other explanation =P Anyways, we all know this is just more PR talk.

I'm actually pretty sure the software was crap.  It was pretty obvious that microsoft wasnt ready to reveal the xbox when they did.  I think they thought they had another year before sony released and were scrambling to get everything in order at the last minute.  I mean, crap, the system still hasnt launched outside of the 13 launch countries yet...

The X1 and PS4 are built almost exactly like PCs. MS has been developing PC sdk for how long now!? You are grasping at straws - this simply isn't true. A new SDK makes things easier, but it doesn't allow you to get more out of hardware than before.

Games will obviously be better in the future - things always improve with time on consoles, but there's never been such a clamour for hailing an SDK as a saviour as there is now. You should give that a thought.

This is nonsense.

Im not grasping at anything.  All sorts of developers have come out and said the new sdk's make it a lot easier to get performance goals out of the x1.   Im not saying anything about performance from the hardware being doubled or anything, just that the sdk before was complete crap like you jokingly said in your post and it was hampering developers ability to get optimal performance from the hardware.

My point was microsoft was not ready to release the x1 when they did, if you look back, it is hard to really argue that they were ready...

anything I don't have or will get sucks and can't be better period

I don't see anyone upset here, just people incredibly skeptical about the double performance claim.

After how many "secret sauce" rumors we've gone through, i'm more surprised to find anyone believing it than not. When you are repeatedly burned by something it's often wise to stop putting your hand in the fire :P

To the guy's credit, semantics come into play here. Doubling performance does not mean an actual 100% increase in performance, like going from 30fps to 60fps. In fact, you need a lot more than 2x the performance to actually jump from 30 to 60, let alone from 720/30 to 1080/60. Hardware power and development is not linear.

Nobody's "upset", it's just that it's amusing how something that happens in every generation is being claimed as "secret sauce". So secret that it applies to every console, amirite.

Xbox One: the system of secrets. Exploring it is like raiding a tomb, you'll never know what you find.
