Why not go with DX13 instead and quadruple the performance?

Mantle performance increase was also because it allows PCs to have close to the metal performance that consoles have always enjoyed. Mantle will not give any performance increase to consoles. Dont get me wrong of course DX12 will improve xb1 performance, it will have multiple graphical API updates througout its lifetime that will be better optimised use new techniques and slowly increase its performance, but this will be the same for all graphics hardware for all platforms.

going of that 40% of yours while thats isn't a doubling of performance but 80% isnt that far off

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

no idea what your talking about now, consoles will never get 40% increase, never mind 80 or 100, 40 was for PCs that for the first time can have APIs as close to the metal as console ones and even that was best case, and it was a mega huge story.
40 - 100% for a console is fantasy land and thats why this news is not covered by any respectable tech website.

It is not about doubting what the guy said, it is about knowing with absolute certainty that what the guy said is complete and utter bullshit. How cpu and gpu interact in the past, present and future is a difficult subject I'm not going to lecture on. There was the recent Build conference and within that, a talk about XBox One hardware by an ms guy who knows his stuff. He mentioned some very intereting and new facts that have not been covered yet in any forum I've seen. Again, too technical, but there was a point that is very important to mention concerning DX12 and magical speed increases: That crucial part of DX12 ("Draw call hell") was already in the XBox One os segments when the console launched. There will only be some speed increases if a) the software used a "detour driver path", or better: the easy driver path and b) the cpu was choked by the software. I have not heard about anyone complaining that their software choked the Jaguar cores so b) is not likely to be a source of speedup.
The speed will only increase if developers will examine their esram/ddr ram use down to the last kByte (essentially foregoing many "recipes" ms offers in their sdks) and/or use some obscure future DX12 extensions. Even then, I don't expect more than a few % of improvement per year. Then again, LibGCM on the PS4 may offer similar improvements over time so we'd still be at a stalemate as far as speed is concerned
I wish people would forget about the specs of the Xbox One and just enjoy the games.

It's funny (and kinda sad) to see so many less-informed ones completely dismiss his claims. I know that some of you desperately don't want this to happen for reasons that are completely immature and ridiculous, but only time will tell HOW much of a difference DX12 makes on PC/tablet, WP and XBO games. Looking at the difference between most early 360 and PS3 games to how they are now I can easily see a massive improvement that could possibly be called a 100% improvement. Seeing that what's being purported here is something beyond that typical 'getting to know the console' process that every console has, the improvements could be more significant. Is it really too much to ask for some optimism about the future of gaming from those that claim to be its biggest fans? |
I dont think you understand the reason why a 100% improvement would be ridiculous. That would mean that Microsofts current API based on DX11 was utter shit all along that they can possibly manage a twice as fast performance on a closed system like a console. Which should be way easier to efficently programm for. Consoles always got super cheap drawcalls which is what DX12 is being praised for on PC where it infact can be a big improvment. But the Xbox one api cant have been that bad in the first place a 100% power improvment on a console would mean that Microsoft intentionally had to make their console API like shit for no reason just so the next iteration can give it that much of an advantage. And there is still the Physical Powergap the PS4 always will have whatever happens this will never result in Xbox one having equal/better graphics than PS4 which is what a increase of the current Xbox one performance by two would lead to. It has nothing to do with pessimism I dont own any of the current gen consoles. And I won`t buy one any time soon but the thought of Direct X which is unnecessarily bloated for consoles because its made to run on different hardware would somehow magically increase the performance of the Hardware by 100% (twice the GPU power) is batshit insane.
So, MS developed an examplary close to the metal API for the 360 (over the course of many years ofcourse), but released their new console with a pretty much general API, that overloads the core 0 ?
Either this dev guy is not as well informed as he claims or MS didn't learn much from their previous success.
It sounds especially weird to me because this gen all manufacturers chose lowly powered CPUs and relatively beefy GPUs, a setup that absolutly needs an API with an ideal task distribution in order to get the most out of that GPU.

Unfortunately there are misguided people who build religious sects on the specs. Look at misterxmedia's blog entries for very, very misguided persons...

Agreed.

This isn't the same. The Cell was more powerfull but needed great coding to bring the power to light. XBone has weaker hardware but can be better utilized with this tech, surely you see the diff
