I was only complaining because reading these things on a phone really sucks!
I think there's quite a difference between a PC and a phone though: most PC gamers built their own PC, while you don't have to do that with phones. Why PC gaming hasn't taken off more than it already has is kinda weird though, at least to me. But don't you think handhelds will become increasingly niche? And will it be big enough for Nintendo to focus on still, after a lot of the 3rd aprty support goes away to mobile?
I'd like just a short list of want you want to see on Nintendos next portable. Right now I kinda know more of the things you DON'T want to see; no more gimmicks (so that's 3D, probably dual screens, touch screens, and a second analog stick) and the bare minimum to be able to game. Right now it kinda sounds like you want the PSP. Or even the GBA. Maybe just throw in an analog stick for good measure. But I'm quite sure that's not what you really want?

Most PC gaming is not done on gaming PCs. People talk as if the gaming that is done on smartphones is anything new, but for the most part it really just took the flash and browser games from the PC and switched the mouse for a touchscreen. Royalties from third party games aren't the highest source of profit for Nintendo (but it is the easiest as other companies are doing the work to make a console manufacturer rich), so there is reason enough to continue, even if handhelds become so niche that no more than 50m systems can be shifted in a generation.
The clamshell design with two screens (one touchscreen) can make a return, bigger d-pad and buttons, d-pad moved into the primary spot, one slide pad, all the same buttons that the 3DS already has, no 3D. Higher resolution screens than the 3DS, but no notable increase in processing power (because there's no demand).

Yes, I agree that mobile games are mostly old flash and browser games, but putting them on smartphones really opened up a whole new market. And as has been stated many times over, kids seem to prefer to play mobile games over games on dedicated gaming machines. And that's a vital market for Nintendo.
While I agree that a 50m handheld market is still profitable enough for Nintendo to persue, we need to acknowleadge two things: 1) with no 3rd party support, probably fewer gamers are going to bother with handhelds (since 3rd parties offer a diveristy that is very much appreciated) and 2) with kids prefering smartphones over handhelds, Nintendo is looking at a shrinking demographic. These two things will in the end lead to the death of handhelds, since fewer and fewer people will pick up handhelds over time.
Considering these two assumptions, I have a hard time seeing how a HDS (which is kinda what you're describing what you want from Nintendo next time around) is going to bring new gamers to Nintendo. I stand by my first statement in this whole discussion: Nintendo needs to do something new, something innovating.
I think you're partially right; handhelds and mobiles can co-exist, and a market of 50m is good enough for Nintendo to continue their portable business, but in the end, they need to expand their demographic and get new costumers. And you don't do that by doing the same old things.
