Forums - Nintendo - Game Boy Advance Games On The Wii U Virtual Console Are Single Player Only

Going solo

Game Boy Advance games are hitting the North American and European Wii U Virtual Console very soon[/url], and Nintendo has posted some fresh details up on its Japanese site. The biggest news is that all of the launch batch of titles are all listed as being single player only — even those which had multiplayer capability in their original form.

This is perhaps understandable given the fact that GBA titles used a link cable to connect players, but it's a shame that we won't be able to have multiplayer competitions on F-Zero: Maximum Velocity — one of the first GBA games to hit the service — or future offerings. Mario Kart Super Circuit — which boasted four-player link-up using a single cartridge on the original console — is arguably going to be a lot less interesting without the opportunity to take on your friends.

Of course, solo play is only confirmed for this initial batch of games — there's a chance that Nintendo could be working on a mulitplayer solution as we speak and will push out updates to existing GBA titles as and when it is ready — but that's a slim chance, at best.

In other news, Nintendo appears to have scanned the original manuals for the games it is releasing on the Japanese Wii U eShop — it's not known if these will make their way into the digital releases, but it would be highly likely. Hopefully the same courtesy will be extended to the North American and European eShops when the games are launched here.

Not too surprising, it would take a lot more effort and time to make each multiplayer game online compatible. Ah well.

I think this is ok. Like the quote said these games weren't designed for one screen multiplayer, but rather were for multiple screens.

So pumped for Mario and Luigi: SSS
I played all of it's sequels but never the first!

Still having mine from forever ago with the games already, this is very unappealing. It already was but more so now. Nintendo has made it better to use emulators on pc.

The bigger news is the awesome VC lineup for the Wii U in april @.@ that is a lot of great games...

Advance Wars, Mario & Luigi, Metroid Fusion, Kirby, F Zero: Maximum Velocity, Warioware, Golden Sun, Yoshi's Island:SMA3 and SMB3?!

The lack of multiplayer doesn't bother me too much... The £6.29 asking price, on the other hand, is disappointing.

I never played Multiplayer on GBA... That said, I think I'll stick to emulators for PC and PSP for my GBA needs.

What did you expect.  It's Nintendo after all.  Extremely high digital prices in compared to all the other digital markets, PSN, XBL, and Steam.

Hopefully River City Ransom EX makes its way to VC - though it is only one player unlike the NES version, you can recruit your own gang members, you can create your own character (after you buy an item that unlocks after completing the game a first time) there's way more moves than the NES version, and the framerate is perfect.

That sounds awesome! I loved the original on the NES.
