Forums - Sony - PS4: Support for PS1 and PS2 Titles with Native 1080p(confirmed?), VR Demos and More Coming According to Insider

Dark Cloud, Dark Chronicle and Rogue Legacy pleaaaaaaaaase Sony. So annoyed I missed out on them the first time when I was too young to realise how good they were, though I wonder if this is going to be restricted to Sony exclusives.

PS1 games on the other hand isn't really exciting for me. Aside from some platformers I can't imagine there is many games that hold up well now.

Da fuq?

So many PSX games are still good now.  First off, RPGs.  Then there's Nightmare Creatures, Soul Reaver, Blood Omen, Armored Core, Alundra, Die Hard Trilogy, Omega Boost,  Colony Wars, Syndicate Wars, Ehrgeiz, Mega Man Legends, Driver, etc.  That listi really on scratches the surface of PSX titles worth owning.

Anyways.  Hopefully this emulation works for disc and digital copies of PSX games.  I'll be able to sell my space heater PS3 and keep my Slim for PS3 games.  If the quality of upscaling is as good as it is for PC, playing games through PS4 emulation is going to be pretty mindblowing.

BC games can't possibly be turned into "native" 1080p. They very will could be upscaled to 1080p though.

However, it is smart of Sony to copy the VC idea and put out its rich PS legacy as well.

Sprites would be upscaled with some form of image filtering, 3d geometry can be upscaled and have AA applied, texture mapping coordinate issues (wobble wobble textures) on ps1 can be addressed too.

The joys of emulating on a dynarec.

I went back and tried some of my favourite PS2 games a couple years back and a lot of them didn't hold up very well at all, that's why I can't imagine there being a lot of PS1 games that I would like to play.  Each to their own I guess.

Sony to own e3 yet again this year? I think so.

You have been tainted by graphical progression, you have my sympathies.

I'll take it if it is what people are interpreting this rumor/news as; I still have every retail PS1 and PS2 game I've bought to date, although less than 10% of those are games I'd care to replay.

More realistically, I'd expect to see the games for sale on the PSN Store with the higher res rendering for polygon/3D games and upscaling for rasterized cell animated games. I'm not sure what the advantage would be for SCE to add optical game BC to the PS4 well after the launch other than as a bullet point for Playstation brand consumers who have old game collections.

We'll see.

Unfortunately, I think you're right. Sure, it would be a selling point for the PS4.  But Sony would not see a dime for all the old titles people would be playing from disc. I expect them to have a library of titles available for purchase on the store. If they allow disc based games, then that is gravy.

That being said, I personally will not be affected by it one way or the other.  My computer, PS3, PS4, XBOX360, XBOX, Wii U, and N64 are all hooked up to the same TV. My PC is more than capable of running the emulator PCSX2 at 1080p with antialiasing at 60fps. I can either hook up my PS4 controller or my XBOX360 controller to my PC and I'm good to go. I already have a high def PS1/PS2 gaming option connected to a large TV. So I have no need to re-purchase my old games and Sony will therefore not see a dime from me for re-purchases...ever.

But if they do a solid for the fanbase and allow discs to be used in emulation, I will be more than willing to return the favor and purchase more digital games that I do not already own instead of trying to track them down on ebay. Doing nice stuff for fans goes a long way with me.

Those all sound really cool. But is the BC part talking about downloadable versions of old games, or being able to actually put your disc in the console?

Not sure about PS2 games, but as far as I'm aware the PS4 can't read CDs.

About CD, it's a question of adding software support for it and I think only for audio-cd. Sony already talked about an update to enable it.

As for BC on physical games, no announce about that, it would be good but I think the point for them is to sell games.

Intersting, I recall reading that the lens itself couldn't read them.  No software could fix that, but I read that back around February during announcement time.

That's what yoshida San said in a chat in November, that they were discussing about when they'll add the feature. There are some news all based on the chat like this one.

Now that I think about it, that's the first and last time I read news about it, I hope he knows what he talks about ! But really, I've never heard about a lens that read BR and DVD but not CD.
