Superchunk its defo native cos in emus like PCSX2 and Dolphin you have the option of rendering the game at native res and upscaling to 1080P and the image looks alot more blury then if you set the emu to native 1080P.

I'm probably misreading what you wrote, but the bolded says you have two options to me.

  1. play game at native
  2. play game upscaled to 1080p
That to me is an OR scenario, not AND.

I think it is upscaled to 1080p in which I mean the same way you can take an old pc game like say the original far cry and amp the resolution up to whatever level you like on a newer pc, the game looks cleaner but the textures are still blurry because it is just an up res, and the polygons look more pronounced and blocky because the lower resolution is not there to hide the low poly count.

To do native 1080p i think you would need to redo the texture assets if it was not made for that resolution.

If that is not the case then all this talk of native 1080p games was just pure bull then.

Guys, native 1080p has absolutely nothing to do with the assets/textures.  It's all in how the lines between vertices are rendered.  Nothing more.  Emulators have had the ability to render games in whatever native resolution your monitor and CPU/GPU could handle for a while now.  I've been playing 1080p PS1 games for years. The assets are the same old ones from 15-20 years ago, but the game is in full blown 1080p (full screen, obviously, and it was actually 1200p when I had my old CRT). Same thing with PS2 games and Wii games in recent years as emulators and processing power have caught up.

I understand you explanation and it is just as I thought, the game basically looks the same just cleaner. I also play on pc I just don't bother normally to discuss graphics.

My thing is all the PR behind native 1080p, if you can just take a game made 15 years ago and make it native 1080p, then for me it holds no weight in bringing it up in a graphics discussion now.

For sure.  1080p has become a buzzword that really doesn't mean as much as many people think it does.  It's just the resolution.  The game underneath is exactly the same.

Curios to see how they will implement PS1/2 emulation, if original discs will be playable and how good emulation will be.

Anyone that ever played anything via Dolphin knows how much more there is to good emulator than just rendering in higher (native) resolution, so I'm hoping that's what they are aiming for.

If only we could have PS3 backwards compatibility... Imagine instantly adding games like The Last of Us, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, inFAMOUS and more to the PS4's library!!!

According to some PS1/2 had the best library of all times. Having PS3 BC would only mean the devs could skimp out on the much needed HD ports. I don't want to play PS3 TLOU on my PS4. I want to play PS4 TLOU without the horrible horrible jaggies.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Those all sound really cool. But is the BC part talking about downloadable versions of old games, or being able to actually put your disc in the console?

Not sure about PS2 games, but as far as I'm aware the PS4 can't read CDs.

About CD, it's a question of adding software support for it and I think only for audio-cd. Sony already talked about an update to enable it.

As for BC on physical games, no announce about that, it would be good but I think the point for them is to sell games.

I'll take it if it is what people are interpreting this rumor/news as; I still have every retail PS1 and PS2 game I've bought to date, although less than 10% of those are games I'd care to replay.

More realistically, I'd expect to see the games for sale on the PSN Store with the higher res rendering for polygon/3D games and upscaling for rasterized cell animated games. I'm not sure what the advantage would be for SCE to add optical game BC to the PS4 well after the launch other than as a bullet point for Playstation brand consumers who have old game collections.

We'll see.

It would certainly shorten the time the PS3 would remain in production.

Realistically, the PS4 doesn't have enough processing power to emulate PS3 games, so the only way PS4 owners will be playing PS3 games on their consoles will be through the PS Now subscription service.

I'd love to be wrong on this one, but I tend to keep expectations more within the realm of the plausible.

I actually found myself shopping for a new PS2 awhile back in case I ever wanted to play any of my old PS2 games. And then I thought better of it.

I have my original (from 2000) PS2 in storage and a broken PS3 CECH-A01 60GB unit that I put in a work order for, but never sent back to SCE after boxing it up but I haven't really felt the need to get either of those fixed/hooked up just to play old PS2 games.

It would be pretty sweet to be able to play those games on the PS4 though. But until I see official confirmation, it's just a pipe dream.

BC games can be played in 1080p without any upscaling, this is what every emulator like pcsx2 and epsxe can do right now and Sony was hiring emulation staff a while ago.
