No, but if everything becomes all digital, there's no reason to purchase anything on console except for exclusives or because your friends buy it for one console imo.

Its still to early to call it once digital has proliferated enough within consoles I believe that we will see the advent of "virtual consoles", i.e each manufacturer becomes a vendor similar to Steam but that would take significant sacrifices, especially the abolishment of subscription for multiplayer.
But this would require commercially available cheap ready made pcs with plug and play capability and there isn't really anything that comes close to that yet.

Anyway, no. This looks like it's going to be a successful generation for at least one or two of the console companies (Sony and MS) and pretty much guarantees that there will be at least another one after this one unless consoles migrate to some other form that's not so strictly console anymore.

There will be one more after this one, but after that I think the dedicated console idea will start to become outdated.

It doesn't mean "gaming is dead" or anything stupid like that, it just means people will consume/access their content in different ways, in all likelyhood I think in 10-15 years you will get all your movies, TV/cable, and games from an online service and you'll be able to enjoy that content on a variety of devices at home and away from the home too. 

Just because Blockbuster Video died doesn't mean people stopped watching movies at home, they just do so in different ways today. The console is not the be all/end all of gaming. 

There is literally nothing pointing to console dying after this gen. Console sales have increased overall every single generation. This one isn't over yet. But both the ps4 and xbox one shattered sales launch records.

Except for Digital Distribution/Streaming which makes hardware increasingly irrelevant.

Granted, Internet proliferation will take a while, but the reasons consoles exist is because they have an ease of use and price advantage against pcs vs a power/fidelity advantage against smartphones.

The walls are closing in, once mobile becomes powerful enough or PC becomes cheap enough then the market for console hardware will drastically decreased and it would be more profitiable to develop virtual consoles. 

People saying they expect this gen to be short because of shitty wii u performance and Japan are misinformed, this will probably be the longest and last gen, I'd fully expect the PS5, the Nextbox Two, and the Nintendo Wiivolution to be either microconsoles or virtual consoles.

And no matter how strong mobile gets, you'll always be able to fit something more powerful into a bigger box though. 

I personally think this gen will be shorter than the last one, and will last 5 years. Then there will be one more console gen in its current form. After that, there will be no reason to not just get a PC anymore. After that, I agree that console will likely be a micro or virtual console. I don't consider that the death of consoles, I consider it the natural evolution of them. I'm hoping once this happens, consoles will finally become an open platform where you can get games on whatever system, but that's probably unlikely. 

Unlless things go in a different direction, it probably is for me. 7th gen part 2 just isn't doing it for me. I need more than just a sharper image on screen to make me happy.
