Is gaming doomed?

The numbers are there and they don´t lie.

Console business have been in decline for some years, and it continues to be. The new devices are failing in bringing new consumers to the market.

I don´t believe in a premature ending of the console market this generation (for the next gen, maybe, that would be in a decade or so), but business overall will surely be smaller this time and all the three console makers will have to come with creative solutions and paradigms breaks to keep this business profitable, specially considering development costs.

We will see the market going back to similar numbers to the GC/PS2/Xbox/GBAdvance era, naturally divided differently, as we have 5 main devices this time instead of 4, and also an still increasing interest in mobile/tablet/PC Gaming - a trend that has been going for quite some time and right now doesn´t seem to go down soon.

Maybe for the 9th generation we will be playing of a different type of console. One that will be more similar to a PC than a dedicated game machine, that we will be using for full home entertainment, but who knows?

No. The systems might be really different, but they'll still exist in one form or another.

Plus Sony might move to the cloud and Microsoft may drop xbox, but Nintendo is certainly making a new portable and a new home console.

Yes, they finally become PCs.

Hell yes! The PC Master Race would become even bigger!

Definitely not the last console gen. Though how games are distributed may change and affect the gaming landscape soon. I think the big fight for the next few gens will be physical vs. digital copies of games. With big companies doing both and smaller/niche companies using digital.

Nope!

There still a need for storage, networking, USB ports, hook up for VR Headset and Kinect, etc. It's components like rams, CPU & GPU aren't going to be as important and will not cost as much if it's handle with cloud processing. But I don't think consoles will want to kill off offline play. The cost of Xbox Live and PSN + would also have to go up with cloud processing. You might save on the consoles price but wind up having to pay a monthly $50 subscription.

Beside your making it sound like Sony and Microsoft wouldn't benefit from not having to be bogged down by a pricey consoles. Sure the barrier to entry would be less then before and you'd see more of the OUYA and most likely competition from Google and Apple. But, both Sony and Microsoft have been losing money selling their consoles and would probably rather focusing on the gaming side and developing better dedicated gaming OS.

It's the casual end that is saturated with tablets, handhelds, phones and various other devices like android dongles/mini pcs. Powerful dedicated gaming hardware will always be in demand. VR will become mass market and require dedicated hardware.

Nintendo is an established worldwide console manufacturer but their console has sold poorly based on very low peformance hardware but both PS4 and Xbox one are looking healthy and will be much healthier again when they reach a more mass market price.

I think games consoles are here at least for the next ten years and possibly well beyond.
