1. Valve- They only release a few games, but everything they touch seems to turn to gold (Half-Life, Counterstrike, Left 4 Dead, Portal).

2. Bioware- They've had a shaky couple of titles but there are few who're as good in the WRPG genre and fewer still who can meld the WRPG genre with others (Baldurs Gate, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, SW:KoToR).

3. Bethesda- The other great WRPG dev and one whose games have yet to be replicated in terms of sheer scale (Elder Scrolls, Fallout 3)

4. Naughty Dog- Highly polished titles that are pure quality. Uncharted 1-3 and Last of Us are titles that simply need to be played.

5- Ubisoft Montreal- They produce some crap (out of necessity I guess), but they're an incredibly capable (and large) developer who have made some of the best open-world and platform games ever made (Assassins Creed series, Far Cry 3, Tom Clancy games, Prince of Persia etc.).

Good choices.

I respect Valve but as I have a strong bias against anything first person, their games generally fail to appeal to me. Still they're more pro-consumer than most and their games are of a consistent quality so I can see that.

Bioware and Bethesda used to both be on my list too. I love Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Dragon Age: Origins, and the KOTOR series; but I never had much of a connection to the Elder Scrolls series (though I'll admit they're good production-wise), and handing Fallout over to Obsidian, the kings of unfinished pap left Bethesda uninteresting to me. Bioware did the same with KOTOR (again Obsidian, why?!), they just plain ruined Mass Effect and they turned Dragon Age into "Final Fantasy XIII Western Edition: Revenge Of The 100 Hour Ultra-Linear Shitfest". I look at both with suspicion now which is a shame, but particularly Bioware who I now actively dislike. Still, let's keep it positive. They've made some awesome games, including some of my favourite games of all time... for that at least I have to give them props.

As for Ubisoft Montreal; they're great. I love the Rayman series and Spliter Cell and Prince Of Persia are great series but I never found them to be consistent. They're one of my favourite developers but I never liked Assassin's Creed, I've no interest in Far Cry, and their crappy dancing games are just embarrasing. They make some gold, but they also make some turds so it makes me dubious. I'm looking forward to Watch_Dogs though.

All in all, great choices. Remember my critique is all personal stuff, so don't let my opinion ruin your enjoyment. By all means let's discuss, but we're here to talk positively.

I actually love Obsidian stuff. When it comes to writing, they're among the best WRPG devs out there. When it comes to putting a complete working game together they seem to fall short in a couple of areas (usually mechanical or bug related, but I suspect that comes from using third-party tech) that stop their games from attaining classic status. Pillars of Eternity actually looks pretty good and is old-school in terms of mechanics (which is what they excel at) so I hope that will become a classic.

With Bioware, they've made a couple of mis-steps, Dragon Age especially but I'm hopeful Inquisition will get the balance right. With Mass Effect, they only really messed up the last 30 minutes of a hugely ambitious trilogy and they actually devoted resources to fixing it for free which I think should be respected. Their problem imo is they've grown hugely in the last 5-10 years and have multiple teams so some of the charm of the older games is harder to replicate.

5. Retro Studios- They didn't make many games, but all of them ( from what I played) are really great. The Prime trilogy is one of the best video game trilogies ever with Metroid Prime being one of my all time favorite games. Donkey Kong Country Returns was also a pretty good game and from what I heard Tropical Frezee improves upon that game in many ways! I only wish they would try to make  new IPs since they are very talented!

4. Old Capcom (RIP)- Nowdays Capcom is a joke, but they used to be so damn great! They made many great Mega Man games ( the bad ones barely existed!), the Resident Evil games were pretty good, the first 4 Breath of Fire games were pretty enjoyable,  DuckTales was tons of fun and they even worked on Minish Cap which is my 3rd favorite 2D Zelda game ( behind AlttP and ALBW)!

3. Squaresoft ( RIP)- Same deal as Capcom. Square was so damn awesome back then. Most of the FInal Fantasy games they made were simply fantastic, Super Mario RPG was a gem, Chrono Trigger was a masterpiece and they also made many awesome games that sadly stayed in Japan like Bahamut Lagoon and Seiken Densetsu 3!

2. Valve- Most of Valve's games are so much fun. I always have a good time playing some good ol' Counter Strike with my buddies, Team Fortress 2 is also tons of fun, Left 4 Dead 2 is also another game I play a lot with my buddies, Half-Life 2 is in my top 20 and I like the Portal games even if I am not too good at them.

1. Nintendo EAD- Yes. I am a huge Nintendo fanboy so that's why EAD is number 1. They simply made too many great games so I will only count the most important ones. The Mario games ( Mario World, Mario Galaxy, 3D World , Mario 64) are tons of fun, the Zelda franchise is an all-around great franchise, Mario Kart is also amazing ( MKWii wasn't too good, but I am hopeful that 8 will be very good!), the Pikmin games are unique and fun and many other games like Wave Race, Star Fox 64 and F-Zero!

Honorable mention:
Naughty Dog- Simply for Jak and Daxter, the old Crash games and Uncharted really. I don't really care about The Last of Us ( don't kill me!) and the sequels to Jak and Daxter weren't really that good so that's why Naughty Dog is not in my top 5.

I also enjoy Obsidian stuff, when it works... Star Wars: KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas and Alpha Protocol where all so very broken I consider them faulty and deserving of a full refund. That said I love KOTOR 2 which I consider one of my favourite games of all time. The others become far more playable once you install a few mods, I just feel that a game should stand on it's own which they've never yet managed.

As for Bioware, I hope you're right. I'm expecting nothing of note from Inquisition, but maybe it'll be a worthwhile game. As for Mass Effect, I respectfully disagree. I genuinely consider everything after the first to be an insult to gaming. Mass Effect 2 isn't a bad game, hell, Mass Effect 3 isn't a bad game either... but they're not good games, and they're certainly piss poor Mass Effect games. Mass Effect was one of the best selling games of 2007. There was no need to rush to the centre market in a desperate attempt to grab the Gears Of War market. I wanted a sci-fi RPG, not a third person shooter. In the first game the shooting was a means to an end, in the second game it's the core gameplay. I consider Mass Effect to be one of my top 5 games of all time. Depending on my mood it occationally sits at number 1. The changes to the setting, the background, and the gameplay mechanics just leave a bad taste in my mouth. Hell, the inclusion of ammo in the second game alone outright offends me. It tells me Bioware think we're so pathetic, so stupid, so incapable of imagination, that we cannot handle a game with shooting without ammo because ammo is how all the military FPS games do it.

Mass Effect 2 and 3 was a franchise that stole my heart going and stabbing me in the back in a desperate attempt to attract the dude-bro market. As far as I'm concerned, they both compromise quality, scope, genre integrity, and artistic merit for wide appeal and it makes it so that the franchise has no soul. No, the ending isn't what I have a problem with in Mass Effect 3, it's just the point where everyone else realised the franchise had become a vapid hollow shell of it's former self... I noticed as soon as I started playing Mass Effect 2. The industry already caters to the fans of shooters and action well enough, they didn't need to take away my sci-fi RPG and rape it for the dude-bro market... I'm sorry, but I can't forgive Bioware for that.

In no particular order, I'd say....

Bioware - Always loved these guys. KOTOR, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, Dragon Age.....say what you will these guys make some of the greatest RPGs out there. Sure, DA2 was a let down, but EA obviously rushed the shit out of that game, so I can't even blame them for it. By the looks of things Inquisition will bring Dragon Age right back to the top. As for ME3's ending.....that was the biggest overreaction ever by a fan base. Seriously, that game was a masterpiece. I hated that ending too, but what it turned into on the internet was just stupid. Few games touched me as deeply as ME3 did multiple times throughout.

Bungie - They created Halo. Nuff said. Seriously, Halo is the reason I even got into gaming way back when, and Bungie has never missed a step. Destiny looks amazing as well, and I'm sure it'll be a huge hit. These guys can do no wrong. You know, besides Armor Lock.

CDProjectRed - Now to be fair, I've only played 2 of their games. Witcher 1 and 2, but they made quite an impact. Witcher 3 looks to be yet another huge step up from them, and I'm also very intrigued by Cyberpunk 2077 (gaming needs more cyberpunk). Their games are deep, mature in every sense of the word, immersive, and they just seem to keep getting better.

Remedy - They don't seem to make all too many games, but every game they've made I have absolutely loved. Max Payne 1 and 2 were some of my favourite games back when I still played more PC. Super fun gameplay with a dark, intriguing story. Alan Wake was one of my absolute favourite games of last gen. Say what you will about repetitive gameplay (which it had), but the game just gripped me in a way very few games ever do. It's one of those you wish you could forget and play through it for a first time over and over again. The DLC also added some cool elements too it that could eventually be incorporated into the sequel it will hopefully get someday. I can't wait to see more of Quantum Break. I'm sure it'll be a masterpiece.

From Software - Another very recent entry into my top 5 and not too many games to back it up, but you know what....the little I have played more than justifies them being here. I never played Demon Souls, because I didn't own a PS3 at the time, but I did get to play Dark Souls, and I loved every last bit of it. In an environment where every game these days seems to baby you, Dark Souls was a real breath of fresh air. I'm still holding out for a next gen version of DS2, but rest assured I will dive into that game head first sooner or later, and likely won't emerge again for some time.

Media Molecule:
One of the most crative studios out there, the LBP games were great but Tearaway was just awesome.

Bioware:
Couldn't care less about ME but i like Dragon Age (yes the second one as well).

Nihon Falcom
Ys is one of the greates series ever.

CD-Project
"The Witcher" is all that needs to be said here.

Drinkbox Studios
Yes i liked Guacameele that much

5. Ubisoft Montpellier

Michel Ancel is Ubisoft's greatest asset; his games are consistently stellar. Almost everything Montpellier touches turns into an excellent game, whether from an established franchise (Rayman), a brand new IP (Beyond Good & Evil), or even a licensed property (King Kong).

4. Retro Studios

There will probably never be another studio as good as Retro at reviving derelict franchises. What Retro did with Metroid and Donkey Kong is extraordinary. It brought beloved characters and worlds back to life with reverence and a touch of its own creative energy, and, in the process, created one of the best video game trilogies ever made.

3. Kojima Productions

I'm a huge fan of Hideo Kojima. In my mind, he's second only to legendary game maker Shigeru Miyamoto in terms of technical skill and imagination. The studio that bears his name is equally brilliant. Sure, Kojima Productions' portfolio isn't as diverse as some, but its games are masterworks.

2. Rare

I still love Rare, despite its decade-long slide into mediocrity. During the 1990s, the British game company turned out hit after hit, with suprising swiftness. Over an eight-year perioud it mastered the first-person shooter, the arcade racer, and the platform game, in some intances surpassing its benefactor Nintendo.

1. Nintendo EAD Kyoto: Group 3

The team responsible for The Legend of Zelda series earns this top spot. In my mind, Zelda is the very best video game franchise, and the staff at Kyoto Group 3 have done a tremendous job maintaing that legacy. Whichever perspective, whichever platform, Eiji Aonuma and company make it work, and make it sing. I trust this team above all others to release a polished, coherent, well-designed game.

Honorable mentions go to Bungie and JAPAN Studio.

5.VanillaWare : For the gorgeous 2D, amazing OST, and dynamic gameplay. Both Odin Sphere and Muramasa are in my top 15.

4.Atlus team : Mostly because of shoji meguro. I could have said persona team but SMT, DDS and devil survivor are all great series too.

3.Maxis : For Simcity. I spent hundred of hours on this serie, and even if both sims and spore are meh IMO, they deserve the place just for this amazing serie.

2.NIS : Replayability, Character design, OST, Gameplay, Storyline, they just do everything right, everytime. They will never make a GOTY, but whatever, they have their fans, and don't need to expand their userbase. They do just fine like this, and can keep going for years.

1.Square : Tetsuya Nomura turned my mere hobby into passion. Kingdom Hearts and TWEWY are both in my top 5, and Square overall is one of the most influencial studio in the industry; from bringing the scenari to another level with FF IV and VI to reviving Tomb Raider, they transformed gaming from a mere kid hobby to the media it is now.

Naughty dog, ubisoft montreal, rockstar north, clover studio and CD Project Red.

5. Nintendo EAD -
Not sure which Nintendo studio is which, so I just copied what everybody else put. Anyway, every game they make is meticulously polished and a tonne of fun.

4. Naughty Dog -
Nicknamed Naughty Gods for a reason. They were technologically well ahead of every other developer last gen. Their games are very fun and very well written.

3. Square Enix -
They've consistently delivered some of the greatest JRPGs of all time. Yes, even now.

2. Kojima Productions -
Kojima's games are extremely unique, with an odd blend of East and West, realism and fantasy, seriousness and humour, all with a convoluted overarching storyline. Although each game has a very different theme and setting, they all have immersive stealth gameplay and incredible boss battles.

1. Atlus Persona Studio -
No other developer had impressed me as much as these guys, with their incredible writing, loveable characters, funky soundtracks and unique gameplay, every game they put out is a masterpiece.
